A question about : Family Board Game suggestions

Hi,

I'm going to buy the family a board game for Christmas to get us all together rather than sitting in front of the TV.

Any recommendations? We have five children, ages 8 to 11, 4 girls and a boy.

What do you reckon they might all enjoy, tough one I know!

Thanks for any ideas.

Best answers:

  • any of the scene it games ( although you do interact with a dvd), monopoly millionair, scrabble, normal monopoly. The cube board game which is very hands on and fun
  • Rapidough, pictionary, cranium, pictureka.
There's also a new 'create things made out of lego and guess what it is' game out but I haven't played it so don't know how good it is. It's called Creationary
  • The logo board game is good and not so much a board game but "who's in the bag" is great
  • I played the Harry Potter Scene it, it was hilarious!! i loved it.
  • My niece recommeded Cranium but I haven't tried it. I like simple games like snakes and ladders (I think you can get a big version), and one of my favourites is Frustration. Charades is always good and can be adapted to the kids' ages. I think it's a great idea by the way and something you will all remember long after the tv programmes are forgotten.
  • Monopoly party edition is quick and easy for children, it doesn't take days/weeks to finish a game!
  • Cranium!
Edited to add extra letters so that it will let me post a one word reply...
  • Uno is a great game. It's a card game, not a board game, but loads of fun. At about Ј5-6, it's very MSE too
  • Hi OP,
There's a great board game called Cat Attack which my children love. Don't know if yours might find it fun?

  • I and my brother are adults now but my Dad is very clever and always wins anythignt hat reies on intelligence whereas my brother is severaly dyslexic and had a severe brain injury as a teen and now finds anything that requires writing or general knowledge difficult. Finding suitable board games is very hard due to this.
Last year we bought the Logo game- this worked fantastically well, as I and my borther knew different logos to the ones my parents did and we all had an equal chance therefore. It was fiun and my brother actually won for the fiurst time ever, which was a fabulous result.
This year I have bought a new game called Sort it Out (WH Smith, Ј18.75). It involves guessing which is the longest, shortest, oldest, youngest etc of several categories, and so doesn't need special knowledge or skills etc. I'm hoping it will fit our requirements too.
  • We've just bought family fortunes. Ј5 = Bargain. Not a board game as such but good fun.
  • Cranium is our family favourite - play it every year at Christmas and have done for about 15 years. Because it's a mix of drawing, describing, general knowledge and making things from plasticine then it's fun for all ages. We also like Pictionary. Will be following this thread for new ideas....
  • Jenga.....you can even turn this into a gambling game, eg last person to successfully remove a piece before it tumbles, gets the dosh.
Card games - 7's or Newmarket always good fun - get the 2ps out for the stake!
  • Big thumbs up to Jenga, the physical aspect is lots of fun for kids.
I also recommend Perudo which is a dice game which requires bluffing and memory skills, might be tougher for an 8 year old, who may need a bit of help.
Mancala is also cool, it is a game where stones are moved round a series of holes to capture and block opponents pieces and requires the player to think ahead a bit to work out good moves. There are lots of variants of the game which comes from Africa.
You can buy decent quality versions of both of these games online for under Ј15.
  • I love Carcassonne - its a tile playing game which can be played on a few different levels so suitable for a range of ages and you can add to it with expansion packs if you want to vary it a bit. It also looks very pretty! And it's not Monopoly!

  • we just bought the family edition of trivial pursuit...it has kids and adult questions.
Another thumbs up for Uno aswell, we play that as a family all the time.
  • We've been playing Creationary since we got it for Christmas, the kids love it. Wouldn't recommend it for very little ones though as you have to make things out of lego without a 'plan' so it can be quite difficult. My 7 year olds have a good go though!
  • Cranium is not intended for children so young. Whilst it is a brilliant game, your kids won't understand 95% of the questions. Maybe there is a children's expansion pack available? I consider myself to be a well rounded, well educated 25 year old and I am far too young for quite a lot of the questions!
Articulate is another brilliant game, but again, not really suitable for kids of that age.
Everybody knows them, but I still think Monopoly and Cluedo are fab. Suitable for adults and children alike.
Your idea of sitting and playing family games sounds wonderful. I grew up with a very dynfunctional family and have no memories of anything like that. I hope in 20 years I'll be having family Christmases with my children
  • Monopoly millionaire is very good as it is not a long drawn out game like the original my 7 year old manages with a little help.
A range of games that are very good for kids are the Brainbox games we have the maths one which is very good
