A question about : Engagement / Wedding Rings

Good Afternoon,

I am due to get married in August but as yet I don't have an engagement or wedding ring.

I was hoping that people would share the sites where people got their rings from. I have looked at the national jewellery shops but the rings I like r too expensive.

I have looked on etsy in this country but the majority of rings r silver which I don't want.

I have looked at some of the American sellers but I have concerns about the quality I would receive plus the custom charges etc.

Thanks in advance xx

  • We looked around all the high street shops but anything we liked was far too expensive for us, so we went over to Birmingham jewellery quarter and had one made to my wife's design. The final price was cheaper than we were quoted and about half the price of the cheapest ring we liked in the high street shops despite having bigger stones inlaid in it.
We had to leave my wife's engagement ring as security while the wedding band was made though, which might be a problem if you don't have one to leave.
  • What sort of rings are you searching for...perhaps if you can give an indication of styles or stones etc it might be easier to suggest places to find them.
The current trend is certainly towards a single stone diamond although if its a particular stone eg emerald, sapphire, ruby combination you might be able to find what you are looking for in antique shops or on preloved sites...dare I even suggest ebay...
Some smaller independant jewellers have access to preloved rings too and they can represent very good value for money too.
It might depending on budget be worth having a look at smaller jewellers who handmake rings...they really are not as expensive as you might imagine, and most can work to a budget.
Alternative idea would be does anyone have a ring or piece of jewellery that could be remodelled sometimes taking the stones from an older setting and placing them in something more suited to you could be a good way of reusing a family piece of jewellery that may otherwise just stay unused....maybe something from mum or gran etc
What sort of budget do you have...
  • 77diamonds and Alba rose. Both amazing quality (on 77diamonds you pick your diamond and with lots of research you can get a ring for 2k worth that would cost over 5k on the highstreet). Alba rose are amazing, and cannot be beaten for platinum bands.
  • We haven't bought ours yet, but we thought Bands of Love looked good:

We live in Birmingham though so will definitely check out the Jewellery Quarter first. My partner recently bought my engagement ring from there and said the price was very reasonable.
  • It's worth having a look on places like ebay for second hand rings depending on what sort of style you are after, but check out things like the sellers other items first, and the description of the ring to make sure you are likely to be getting what you think you are getting. If they come with an insurance valuation or similar so much the better I think. Auction houses may also have jewellery auctions every now and then?
Its also worth looking in pawnbrokers that have jewellery, my friend got a lovely second hand engagement ring for Ј400 which would have been Ј1000 new, my mum picked up an eternity ring for about Ј2k a few years ago which new would have been about 5k.
Birmingham Jewellery Quarter and Hatton Garden in London are good places to go to (and also quite a few of them sell second hand jewellery too), quite a lot of them will have direct access to the ring workshops and can do customised rings to suit a budget - also you can haggle! We bought our wedding rings from Smith and Green in Hatton Garden this weekend, they were Ј400 - Ј600 cheaper than any of the other shops we went into quoted for similar rings, and the service was excellent, I was very happy to be giving them our money over a few of the other sales people we encountered!
