A question about : DVLA Tax Disc Fine
Hi everyone,
Much to my surprise I received a letter through the post today saying I had a Ј200 fine for having no tax on my vehicle.
To my surprise, given that my current tax expires in June 2015.
Basically I can only think of two options
1. My car for some reason has not been updated on the new system as having tax.
2. It was a very sunny day and this somehow detracted from the (presumably automated) camera that took the photograph.
Anyone else experienced this?
Can I invoice them for wasting my time?
Cheers
Best answers:
- In a word....No.
- When did you buy the car - since October by any chance ?
- Bought the car in June from my dad - absolutely certain about the tax!
- How would the sun detract from the camera?
- Check on the DVLA website that your car is still taxed:
https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ - Could it be that you have last year's tax disc on your windscreen?
- Cheers 'maninthestreet'
It says it's not taxed on there.
So basically I have a tax disc I know was bought legitimately and expires in mid 2015 but doesn't show up on the DVLA records.
Anyone know of any good reasons why??? - Since 1st October 2014, the new keeper of a car MUST tax the car themselves - When the keeper changes, any existing tax disc (or tax paid separately after the disc was abolished) no longer applies, and will be refunded to the previous keeper.

This was very widely publicised. You probably got a flier about in with your new V5.
If you haven't done this, you have been driving and keeping the car without tax, and the fine is valid. Sorry. - Yes but our V5C form shows we acquired the vehicle on the 17-08-14!
Hmmmm, incredibly confused. - Nup, just normal mate.
- Thanks everyone for their help anyway!
I'll update tomorrow when the tax office opens!
