A question about : dress shop

Two weeks ago I bought a dress In the shop it seemed fine just the straps needed altering
When my daughter saw me in it she said it was too big at the back
We took it back to the shop and the assistant told me they didnt do changes or refunds on sale goods
I said it was ridiculous as the dress was Ј 50 anyway but they insisted it wasnt there policy and a small sign near the cash desk did say that but I asked why I wasnt told this when I bought the dress and all she said was it wasnt policy to tell everyone who bought things that they didnt change or do refunds
I ended up having to pay a small fee to have it altered
How do I stand regarding this query
Also a credit note wasnt offered to me
any help would be appreciated

  • You are only entitled to a replacement or refund if the item you purchased was faulty. If you wish to return it due to a mistake in purchasing (ie too big) then the shop are not legally entitled to give you a refund. Most shops will refund but it is a goodwill gesture rather than the law.
  • I don't understand what the problem is, you tried it on and thought -

  • I think the policy of some high street shops (M&S, Next etc) where they will give a full refund if you change your mind after you've got the goods home (e.g. shoes don't match a handbag or you just decide it doesn't look good on you) has led to some people to EXPECT that same service from every other shop.
But, as Ivory Tinkler has said, shops are not forced to issue a refund in those circumstances.
  • thanks for the input, much appreciated.
