A question about : Dog Food Questions

Hiya

My dog eats the complete dry dog food - can anyone suggest one that is good quality but fairly cheap? She is currently eating 'Oscars' but my vet doesnt rate it highly.

Also, are there any good, cheap online stores that deliver? I like to buy the 15k bags to save trips and delivery is easier than carrying it!

Best answers:

  • My dogs eat Wagg complete (on special offer at the moment for Ј9.75 (?) for 15kg, supplemented with either sardines, any meat left overs we have, sometimes boiled rice, eggs or raw veggies.
All three of them are fit as butcher's dogs (well -Fat Bob is a little overweight ) have shiny coats and full of vitality.
  • You can't really get that many good quality cheap food. If it's too cheap it would only upset the dogs tummy or give him/her the runs.
Have you tried Pedigree Chum? I don't rate it myself but it's fairly cheap. Bakers are cheap also.
  • I did look a Wagg as it was so cheap but wasnt sure if it was 'too' cheap! Good to hear that its ok, may give it a try.
By cheap I am meaning up to around £20 ish per 15kg bag.
Have tired Chappie and Oscars..... Oscars was ok, Chappie gave her the runs. Havent tried anything else yet hence this post!
  • Dr Johns is fairly cheap but not always easy to get - best to search on the internet to see if anywhere near you does it.
Bakers is cheap but I would not recommend it. My dog was allergic to it - it gave him an upset stomach and made him hyper. The vet said that it is very common for dogs to "misbehave" when given Bakers because it contains a lot of colouring and additives - similar to children being hyper when given lots of sugar! I know also lots of dog trainers do not recommend Bakers.
  • dunno if this helps but I buy large bags from the local animal feed supply shop. 15kg is 9.99 and its gluten free, allergen free. Absolute bargain.
  • ive heard omega by purina is a good dry dog food i am looking at getting that for our dogs soon it is Ј11.99 for a 17kg bag
  • i use gilpa chicken n rice , its Ј8.99 from pets at home for a 15kg sack and the dogs love it
  • don't just look at how much the bag costs but work out a cost per day - some cheaper foods require you to feed the dog more so a 15kg bag will last you less time and work out as expensive as a premium brand.
I don't know why your vet doesn't rate Oscars as I know several people who've used them and recommended them.
We use Burns so not cheap but on a price per day it's not expensive either... I don't know how it'd compare with others
once you've found what brand you want to go with then do a search online - there's a sticky at the top of the pets forum with some good pet site and somewhere like petsupermarket is on Quidco and often does money off promotions.
  • My dog eats Skinners working dog food, https://www.seapets.co.uk/search-resu...ery/and/page/3
at the moment it lasts for about 2/3 weeks.
    Carter
PS local dog shelter uses Arden Grange - not sure about price though
  • Hi there we have an American bulldog (10mths)and we feed him on DR johns £6.99 for 15kg bag lasts about 4wks or more.We did try him on the more expensive stuff when he was a pup but it went straight through him so we have stuck to this one.
    hope this helps.
  • Cheap foods I rate would be Chappie, great for most delicate tums and the dry version is MUCH less stinky than its canned counterpart, Autarkey or Chudleys Classic (working dog foods are VAT free so very MSE!). Better quality foods such as James Wellbeloved, Burns or Wafcol are great but usually Ј35 upwards for 15kg. If you have a big dog this gets pricey.
I use dry Chappie because it's the only thing I can feed one of my dogs which doesn't leave him with colitis episodes. It's also good for keeping the weight off him, unlike nasty brands like Bakers (and HOW many colourings do they add to that stuff? Euch!) or lardy Pedigree Chum.
  • Another recommendation for Burns, would be careful going down the cheap food route for the sake of saving a few quid a month!
  • It not what I feed my dogs but have heard wagg is good it is cheap because it is vat free as it is made for working dogs
  • A quick word of warning for 'Working' dog foods, there is a clue in the name! Bear in mind that the average working dog can run 60 - 90 miles per day, usually 7 days a week, this food is designed to give them the energy to do that. So unless you plan on increasing your pet dogs walks then you better start watching thier waistlines!
