A question about : DIY plant markers

I'm sure people probably do this already and not a v original idea...but thought I would chip in with it anyway!

being a slightly older lady with a bad memory, at peak planting time I can't remember which batch of seedlings is which, so I make my own plant markers by cutting rectangular strips out of milk cartons and margarine tubs, cutting a pointy end to poke in to the compost/soil, then writing the name of the plant & date of planting in waterproof marker pen.

I can get at least a dozen plant markers out of a litre milk container and 8-10 from a large margarine tub. cheap and easy :-)

Best answers:

  • I use a chalk pen and write on the pot or tray. Rubs off easily but doesn't wash off. I get hundreds from each pen and no cutting or storing anything.
  • I use lolly pop sticks and write on them in permanent marker, won't be reusable but does me a season and then goes on the compost bin.
  • White plastic spoons are a good choice as well
  • I've used the marge tubs too, but some more unusual ideas here- https://www.backyarddiva.ca/diygardenmarkers/
I might try some this year.
  • I bought a (wooden) venetian blind for the bathroom a couple of years ago and kept the surplus slats. Last weekend i chopped them all down into 6" lengths, sharpened one end and now have around 30 large plant labels
  • I like the idea of the pebble veg markers. Usually I draw a plot layout in my Gardening Journal, so I know what's where, and also helps with rotation.
  • I bought a box of about 1000 many years ago and still got lots left.
Work out about a penny each at the time. I re-use the standard one that i plant each year and wipe off the old name when changing varieties.
    The box may outlive me.
  • I do the milk bottle thing myself, but I have some proper ones I got cheap in B and M bargains last year-kids like them as they are coloured ones-blue, pink and yellow . Think they were 49p for a pack of 200 ish.
Good MSE tip though and definately works. Milk cartons can be planters or watering bottles as well.
