A question about : Disposing of white goods that need repair

Hi

I've got a fridge freezer and a washing machine which need repair but are still useable, so I wasn't sure if I should freecycle them.

As I don't drive, I can't take them down to a recycling centre though I have the option to have the council collect them for Ј10. I'd really like to see them put to good use rather than scrapped, is there any organisations that will collect, repair and re-distribute?

I'm in the Bolton area BTW title=Smile

Best answers:

  • I think your council has to dispose of the fridge freezer for free, sure I remember reading that somewhere. Maybe if you spoke to other neighbours you could arrange an collection of bulky items and share the cost of collection. sorry couldnt be of more help
  • Have a look at the links below. There is a freecycle group in Bolton. Link to join is below too. As long as you say the item needs repair and request collection you should be able to shift these items I would guess.

  • I recently got rid of an old fridge and, like you, wanted it to be used rather than binned. I advertised mine through www.gumtree.com in the freebies section and it went to a very nice chap who was just setting up home with his girlfriend. Very nice feeling. I'm not sure if they operate in the Bolton area though, sorry.
BTW, it does say London's online community but I'm aware that they operate in other areas - hence my confusion regarding Bolton!
  • Bolton WISE (Quest Centre Brownlow Way) used to run a 'white goods' training course where they'd train people to reburbish / repair items like that, and I think the items would go to a good 'home' afterwards - if it's still going perhaps they'd be interested ?
  • Could you also put an ad in the freeads part of your local paper saying free but needs repair? I'm sure some people love tinkering with things like that.
  • Thanks everyone for your brilliant suggestions (still can't see the Thanks button!) I'll have a good look round the links today
  • Shame you're not in Dumfries - I'm looking for an old fridge freezer for my photographic film, paper and chemicals. Though these will keep much longer at low temperatures, the temperature is not as critical as with foods, so anything would be better than nothing if it even sort of works, and it would be in my darkroom so cosmetic condtion is unimportant, but most people seem to assume that no-one would accept a fridge freezer which isn't "as new".
