A question about : Disaster

my iPad mini retina fell out of my bag and the screen has shattered like a spiders web. It needs replacing

I've done a bit of Googling and while I can't pin down an exact price it looks like it will be somewhere in the region of Ј200 leaving it to Apple. Am I right in this assumption.

There appears to be two solutions: let Apple do the job.
Go to a local repair shop and have it fixed for less than half the price.

The machine is well out of guarantee and I do appreciate that if I let a third party at it then it's goodbye to going back to Apple if something goes wrong.

I'm sure other members have had the same problem, what did you do? It's advice I'm after, take a chance and get it fixed locally or give Apple the money and get piece of mind?

Many thanks

Best answers:

  • Entirely up to you.
If you know a local place who does it and who have decent recommendations then I am sure it is fine to save some money.
If you want some sort of Apple reassurance then go with Apple.
I know people who have done both with no problems either way.
  • Please be sensible
Phone the Apple Store and get an updated price for a repair
(Not what someone wrote on their blog months ago)
Likewise as long as you appreciate that the replacement will not be the same as the original part - but if it's cheap enough then if may be worth it.
I'm guessing that decent case would have been cheaper
  • Check with your house insurance. It happened to us, we had to pay a Ј100 excess but they gave us a check for a beand new 1. Ј250.
  • Apple out of warranty Ipad mini repair is Ј156.
However that is rather a replacement with s refurbished produce rather than repairing yours and comes with a 90 day warranty.
  • ipad mini is Ј179 at Tesco direct at the moment so not worth paying apple for a repair if its Ј200, looking on ebay screens are around Ј20 so getting someone local should be around Ј60 ish i would have thought
    or do it yourself

  • Definitely worth replacing yourself for Ј20.
  • "if I let a third party at it then it's goodbye to going back to Apple if something goes wrong."
Untrue. I've had stuff repaired under Applecare which I've opened up and modified. For example, I'd fitted third-party RAM to a Mac Mini (the old plastic type where opening the case requires putty knives), and they didn't so much as raise an eyebrow when a disk drive failed three weeks before the end of the three year Applecare. It's virtually impossible to open a plastic Mini up without leaving traces of your presence, so had they been looking for a reason to refuse the repair they wouldn't have had trouble finding one.
  • Just look at the positives.
One less apple device in world.
Ditch it and get yourself a brand new non apple device.
  • My house insurance covered when I drooped mine. 50 excess and money transferred into my bank account for new one within 72 hours.
