A question about : Defrosted freezer?

Returned from holiday to find large chest freezer defrosted.

I estimate spoiled food to be in the region of Ј450.00.

I have two freezers in the garage, one was fine. The one which has defrosted was plugged into a socket with a trip switch, and when I unplugged it, then switched it on again it's working fine. After talking to neighbours discovered there had been a power failure three days before we came home.

What I want to find out is:
a) Do insurance companies pay out if defrosting
is the result of power failure?
b) Never having made a claim on house
contents insurance, will my premiums increase
as they do with car insurance?

I'd be grateful if anyone has any answers.

Best answers:

  • a - usually
b - potentially depending on your policy (ie, does it have no claims bonus).
  • Thanks for your reply DD.
Not sure about no claims bonus. I'm one of these daft people who has paid premiums for 20 years and never even looked at the policy before now. I suppose if premiums are increased I might get round to shopping around for a better deal.

  • dont want to sound rude pink winged, but Ј450 of frozen food is a lot of value food to be kept frozen.
We have just renewed our house insurance and taken it with new home insurance, and they give us Ј200 free frozen food cover. I very much doubt i will ever make a claim on this instance due to:
-an claim now, has to be declared on future policies at renewal
-this may increase your future premiums
-i doubt our frozen food add up to more than Ј30-35
Depends on what you think, also consider the excess you may to pay, if any.

My insurance covers up to Ј1,000 for frozen food.
I get the impression from your post that you are suggesting that my claim is fraudulent. It is not.
I don't know if you are implying that I couldn't possibly have lost Ј450.00 of frozen food, but I assure you that I have. I spent three hours up to my armpits in horrible smelly, bloody yeugh, cataloging each and every item. So I should know.
You say your freezer contains only about Ј35 worth, obviously it is a great deal smaller than mine, and doesn't contain items such as legs of lamb or salmon.
Mine is a twelve cubic feet chest freezer, used mainly to store meat and fish with the odd pizza and home cooked meal thrown in.
I feel it is worth claiming because I feel I have a genuine claim where I have lost a great deal of food. Yes my premiums may increase in the future, and of course if I change to another insurance company I will declare my claim.
I have paid premiums to this company for 20 years and thankfully I've never had the need to make a claim. Something now goes wrong and you suggest that I store far too much food and that it would not be a good idea to claim?
Is this not what insurance is for? You have something of value.........it is damaged.........you claim?
  • Thank you chipz.......sorry if I sounded a tad agressive, but I'm pre-menstrual female just home from holiday with a defrosted freezer to deal with.
