A question about : David Lloyd Health Club

Does anyone have a David Lloyd gym membership? Is it worth it? I cant see any pricing on there internet site so have no idea what the cost is like.

Thanks

  • from what I've heard it's expensive but very nice - can't remember how much though!
  • Hi Kal
I am an ex-member of David Lloyd, having been a member in England for about five years, and then transferred to Belfast when I moved over here in 2004. Since then I have moved too far away from Belfast to make membership of the club viable, so have left it. Otherwise, I'd still be a member now.
Anyway, just as a ballpark figure, I was paying Ј57 per month back in early 2004. Is that a lot?? Probably, but I was paying over Ј80 a month in England for the same deal so to me it was a bargain, lol. I was a regular user though, and was there at least five times a week, but more usually six, so on a per visit basis it was cheaper than a pay as you go arrangement at the council leisure centre.
I have only ever had single membership and was a peak time user. They do deals for couples (don't have to be married etc, just two people who join at the same time though I think you're supposed to be living at the same address), deals for off peak membership, and I think there was something for students and au pairs as well.
On top of your monthly subscription they will ask you for a joining fee - you can negotiate hard on that, maybe even get them to waive it altogether. Sorry but I can't remember how much I paid but I seem to recall people paying different amounts hence my comment about negotiating.
The club itself is fab! It is very well equipped, the changing rooms/showers are excellent, there is a nice bar/cafe area you can hang about in for a drink or a meal etc, opening hours are long, hairdresser on site....
I'd suggest you give them a call and go and see for yourself and discuss their prices with them - you won't lose anything by just looking and talking. I don't work for them, honest, but I got a lot out of the club and for what I got thought the price was reasonable. BTW some bloke or other who reads the news on UTV is (maybe it's "was" now) a member, so if it's good enough for him...
    Hope that helps.

  • I would go with LA Fitness or that new JJB gym at Boucher. A guy in my class was saying that its really cheap for students, about £19 a month. So i imagine it would be reasonable all round. LAFitness sometimes do 2 for 1 offers, where you pay £30 a month each for a platinum membership which allows you to use any LA club and you get a towel (woo hooo) each time you go.
  • i pay £23.00 for Breathe at the Robinson Centre, with use of Lough
Moss and Belvoir leisure centres, this includeds use of gym, jacuzzi and sauna, all the classes and use of the pool
  • Went to see DL today and it is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!! However the membership I want would be Ј78.50 and Ј25 joining fee which is not soo fantastic - guess I can always dream
  • Ј25 joining fee!? you got lucky, when i joined 18 months ago it was quoted at 125!?! but because i was coming from LA fitness he said he would reduce it to 25?? basically i think the joining fee is totally negotiable.
i would have agreed that its a great club but as of january they stopped all student discounts, senior discounts, guest passes and seen to be focused on cutting corners everywhere! i must say that the facilities are very clean compared with LA or council gyms. The restaurant serves overpriced low grade food, but it does have a bar
  • Queen's PEC is also worth a look - it's been upgraded a lot recently and they're trying to attract new members. Think it's around £40 a month for full membership including classes etc. Only snag is that it's very busy Tues to Thurs but it is a lot quieter at weekends etc.
  • At a LA fitness today as a couple: 73 Ј/ month. We are looking to change to DL, but will cost the double.
Anybody goes to Maidenhead DL. How much do you pay ?
  • Be careful of the T&C's of the gyms. A friend of mine recently left David Lloyd club and had to give 3 months notice which is excessive. She was paying around Ј80 per month for her membershop which included racket sports.
  • If youre just looking for a pool and small untechnical gym, try templemore Avenue in Belfast - really cheap!
  • I joined DL donkeys years ago, having spent a long time looking at all options, it was and still is most expensive. I like the facilities, they are pretty comprehensive, but I hear good reports about the JJB clubs.
For a single peak time membership, I pay 70.00 a month, but make good use of it. I think joining fee is Ј100, but both these fees are negotiable [think this is the reason they don't show any prices on their website] - you can get company and other special rates.
Get yourself a free or guest pass for February and then it might be worth tying to do a deal for March onwards, you'll have to push and haggle to get it, this is when numbers start to drop off post New Year. Failing that, get hold of an existing member and do a deal - DL offer them all sorts of incentives [financial/wine/etc] to reccruit 'a friend' and you could split it.
The UTV guy only lives 5 mins away which is not much of an endorsement really. How often would you use it a week?
  • I recommend JJB gyms, the equipment is top class and modern, they have 2 jacuzzi's, steam room and a swimming pool.
I pay Ј31.50(corporate deal) a month for peak membership so can go whenever i want, staff are very friendly to help u with a fitness program. Also they are always doing deals like if u know someone who goes there u go on the bring a friend week and u dont have to pay joining fee.
  • JJB deal sounds good. Do they have instructor led scheduled group classes - any good? DL is a bit pot luck on the class front!
  • Signing up to DL today I think. It's 48.50, no joining fee, for my chosen club only but it's a 3 month contract, and rolls over month by month. You also get a free hair cut and facial signing up before the 28th. Sorted!
  • Hey everyone,
I have been thinking of joining a gym, with my wife as a joint membership.
What do people think of the PEC? Is it always really busy?
I have been in LA Fitness in Adelaide Street and in seems really nice.
Gym membership is quite a big financial commitment so have been weighing up where would be best.
  • PEC is okay early mornings and I think for most of the day, its just evenings it gets busy. Weekends are ok too, normally you wouldn't ever have to wait for a machine which I think is unusual in other gyms. So it depends on your use patterns.
