A question about : Daughters school trip

My daughter is ill atm and due to go on a school trip in 2 days, if she is still too ill to go what are my rights on getting back any money paid for the trip if i can get any back at all.?

Best answers:

  • Any refund would be at the discretion of the school. You should ask their policy on what happens in this situation - it will not be the first time it has occurred.
  • Any refund will also depend on what kind of school trip that you are talking about.
Is this a one day local trip? A visit to a museum for example?
Or, is it a longer trip? In the UK/overseas?
I would imagine that a lot would depend on whether someone could take your child's place or whether the cost can be met in another way. If the school can not cover the cost in some way then I would think it unlikely that they would have to refund you.
  • If it is a trip abroad the school should have taken out insurance. Whether that would cover illness I don't know BUT at least you can ask.
  • If its a school trip like end of year 6 where they go to PGL(or somewhere like that),they usually have insurance in the cost of the trip. If this is the case the school would get a refund for you .
  • Well that's what I said, - ask.
I cannot know what the policy is or what it covers but the school should have taken out insurance so if the OP is told 'no refund' he/she can then counter with 'Was the trip insured' and 'What does the insurance cover?'
Whatever it DOES cover it won't be the same type of policy a family going on holiday will have
  • Sorry for not making it clearer in my opening post, its a week's trip to the Frank chapman centre in Bewdley.
The cost of the trip was Ј140, a Ј50 deposit was asked for by the school, but no where on any form was there anything about if your child is ill will you be entitled to any money back, or losing the deposit or anything like that. So i am at a loss as to what we may get back if anything at all, but to lose anything i feel is a bit harsh myself and Mom are on benefits and had to pay for the trip in instalments as did alot of other parents whose children who are going, and if we were to lose the Ј50 deposit thats alot to lose if she does not go.
  • The school should have advised all parents about insurance for the trip (even if in the UK, I now find).
    See this
  • How ill is she? Big cold, or life-threatening/in ICU? Is she faking it as she's scared...? Or is it a "proper illness"?
  • When we had a school trip (in nineteen hundred and fried fish) we had a reserve of 5 pupils to replace anyone at short notice - i was 1st reserve and my parents got a phone call night before the trip stating someone reposted sick and asking if i wanted to go
    i was delighted
school was not out of pocket (no damages) so could give a full refund
have you told the school of the illness (your intent to withdraw)???
they might have a dozen other kids bostin to go on the trip - in which case you'll get allllllllllllll your money back - but only if you give them enough toime to sort a replacement
