A question about : Data protection

My exOH has openly admitted to having run b\ckground checks such as credit checks and criminal record checks on myself and several members of his own family (only those who are involved in our childrens's lives.)

He claims to work for a security company set up by himself and several ex-army/ex-police force types in the Arab States. He also claims that it is in his interest to know exactly who is involved with his children, and their background.

He disclosed personnal information to his mother about my bank accounts and my inheritance which, to my mind, I am entitled to keep private.

Have I any recourse whatsoever or is this a justifiable intrusion into my privacy?

Best answers:

  • I would contact the police with reference to the Criminal record checks, they might want to have a look at the "signatures" on the forms.
A CRB Check needs the permission of the persons files you are requesting.
If these have been forged, he will be getting involved with the authorities a bit more than he likes.
  • Re the inheritance - this would be shown in the will of the person who left you the money....Wills are public documents and anyone is entitled to see it once it has been through the probate process (costs Ј6 a copy).
The will may or may not have specified the amount you were to get (e.g. it may just have said 50% of the estate), but the total value of the estate will be shown so it is simple to work out.
