Hi,
My house was flooded last week during bad storm. Carpets and Sofa's ruined along with other belongings. This is a council property and has had problems with floods in past. Council put a drain outside my front door but because next doors guttering is in bad repair the overflow on to my house was really bad and drain couldn't cope. Water came about 8 up some parts. The council have been told many times about guttering but they have not repaired it. Can they be made to pay for my damage?

• yes, but claim on your insurance and they will claim from the other person.
• I take it next door is a council owned property?
• If you have contents insurance, which I sincerely hope you do have, then this should be your first port of call.
  Nobody can say for sure if the council consider you have a claim on them. The only way you'll find out is to contact them & maybe they will arrange to have an assessor come out. But as the storm was the cause of the flood, it might well be put down to an act of God, which should be covered by contents insurance if you do have this.
• I somehow don't thing that poor guttering next door alone would result in 8 inches of water in your house and probably flooding of your neighbours
