A question about : considering not claiming JSA anymore

Long story short I was made redundant, I've been out of work for about a year and have been claiming JSA for just under 6 months. I'm considering not claiming JSA anymore despite having not found employment yet and I'm wondering what the consequences of this might be? I've heard stuff about NI contributions being effected etc.

I have my reasons, the latest being is they're now sending me on a 3 week warehouse course - which I don't want to do because I know it will be as useful as the course they sent me on a few months back. I have an interview next week for a job in the trade I'm trained to do but if worst comes to worst how long will I have to wait before I can reclaim JSA?

I've heard anywhere from 13 weeks to 26 weeks so clarification would be reassuring. Hopefully that won't be the case because I'll have found employment but if not I'm quite willing to live off my savings for 6 months so I can avoid the depressing & demoralising Job Centre.

Thanks

Best answers:

  • If you stop claiming then you won't get your NI contributions paid. After six months claiming it would only be income based you would be entitled to.
  • if it was me i would sign off to avoid having a sanction record.if the government get worse, in future you would have evidence to show you were not obedient enough. i signed on and off without giving a reason, and apart from losing 2 weeks jsa things were fine. But then i had severe depression so ;/
  • where you gonna get money from til you find a job or get back on JSA
