A question about : Confused over Easyjet baggage allowance ...

Hi

I have booked 2 flights with Easyjet (leaves today!) and am now confused about my luggage alowance. I have checked the t&c's and still can't work it out. Can anyone help please?

I will be travelling with my infant son (7 months). As I am travelling out alone and seats were cheap, we booked 2 seats with the intention of taking his car seat onboard for him to sit in. The confirmation email I reseived states:

The 2 passenger(s) in this booking may check in a combined total of 1 hold bag(s) for each flight on this booking. The total hold weight must not exceed 32 kg

My husband is joining us for the end of the holiday so there will be 2 adults flying back and we are happy for him to be on our laps. As my husband booked a return, I have booked seperately a return with my son on my lap. The baggage requirement sent with this booking is:

The 1 passenger(s) in this booking may check in a combined total of 1 hold bag(s) for each flight on this booking. The total hold weight must not exceed 20 kg.

So ... does that mean I can take 32 kilos on my flight out? I want to take some cartons of baby milk so will have far more weight going out than coming back.

Many thanks for any advice...

Best answers:

  • The hold baggage allowance with Easyjet is 20 kg per person. The 32 kg refers to the upper limit of what you are allowed to take in a single bag, but you would be charged Ј9 per kilo excess on the amount over 20 kg.
  • So, as I have booked 2 seats, can I add a bag and get 40 kilos or can I not because 1 seat is for an infant?
    Thanks again
  • Look at the "Manage my Bookings" screen and it will detail what you are allowed and let you add bags if required.
  • It's definitely 20kg per person, but not for the infant, but you take as much weight as you want in the canbin so long as it fits in there little rack at check in, bring a little carrier bag just incase you go slightly over, wear heavy shoes and coats, saves on baggage, you just take them off when flying anyway.
Also we used to put a few things in the bottom of the buggy, they cant tell at check in as you leave the buggy at the foot of the plane.
  • Anyone achieved consistency in the way Easyjet check-in staff decide upon what's paid for carrying golf equipment? Previously we travelled with hand-baggage only and pre-paid the extra for golf equipment. However recently at check-in we were told that golf equipment must weigh less than 12 kilos, if no baggage is checked. Explanation given was that checked baggage gives 20 kgs allowance and the payment for golf equipments adds 12kgs to this, making a total checked baggage weight of 32kgs. Above that, excess baggage charges apply. On this interpretation, if you don't check one bag, then all weight above 12 kgs of golf equipment counts as excess baggage. The cheaper alternative was to check one bag at the airport, at double the price compared with pre-payment.
Is this a new interpretation of some very ambivalent wording in Easyjet's guidance on baggage charges? What's travellers experience?
  • Easyjet allow pooling of luggage allowances, so if you book 2 seats you can have a luggage allowance of 40kg.
HOWEVER if you book only one bag then that drops to 32kg because no single bag can weigh more than 32kg.
  • If its any help-OH and I have just returned from Lanzarote and each took a bike (in a box)-bikes weighed 25kg each-only took rucksacks each. Bikes are included in sports equipment.Prepaid the bike charges online-Ј15 ish each way per bike. Absolutely no problems
  • I am still confused.com
I am travelling with my family group of 6 in august and have booked 4 pieces of luggage and it says i have 120kg. i know as theres 6 of us we get 20kg each. what i would like to know, does this 120kg mean i can have 4 suitcases at 30kg each? please help with this. thanks
  • I think i've got it (please confirm)...
If i want to take a bag on the plane with me, it can weigh no more than 20kg & be no bigger than 56x45x25cm. This has no fee.
If i'm travelling with a bag bigger than this (eg suitcase) it needs to be checked in, but still can weigh no more than 20kg. This however does have a standard fee (Ј18 at last look!!!).
If it does weigh more than 20kg, you will be charged per kg up to a maximum of 32kg (no single bag/suitcase can weigh more than this)
    Correct?
  • I am looking into this too and have found lots of debate on the web about it!
It seems the confusion is that, in terms of checked luggage, there are two different 'allowances', which Easyjet unhelpfully don't do much to explain.
The first is the 'weight per passenger allowance'
The second is the 'bags per passenger allowance'
The weight per passenger allowance is 20kg. Each passenger is allowed to carry 20kg of hold luggage. This allowance is actually free. You get it automatically by booking your ticket and becoming a 'passenger'.
However, although it's 'free' there's no way of actually using it unless you put that luggage into a bag and check it in. This is where the 'bags per passenger allowance' comes in.
Each passenger gets to choose to check in a certain number of bags (up to 8 according to Easyjet website). Easjyet charges for each bag you decide to check in. Those bags can contain your 'weight per passenger allowance'. But checking in more bags does not increase your 'free' weight allowance. So, check in one bag, and you can put 20kg of stuff in it. Check in two, and you get 20kg spread across 2 bags, and so on. So to repeat, paying for extra bags does not increase your weight limit.
Now, here's the thing. If two of you are travelling on the same booking, so each get the 20kg per passenger 'free' weight allowance. Now, you can choose to check in two bags - one each. That would allow you to put your 20kg weight allowance in each bag. However, and this is the confusing thing, Easyjet (unlike some other airlines) allow you to 'pool' weight. This means that if two of you (on the same booking) specify you only want to check in one bag, Easyjet allows you to use that one bag to be filled with BOTH of your 'free' 20kg luggage allowances. In theory, this would mean you could put 40kg of luggage in one checked bag. HOWEVER, health and safety restrictions mean that airport luggage handlers can't lift more than 32kg in any one bag. So 32kg becomes specified as the maximum weight for that bag.
SO, if you go with this option, health and safety restrictions stop you from gmaking use of yourr maximum 'weight' allowance, but it's a better deal (Ј18 for 32kg rather than Ј36 for 40kg) than checking in two bags.
This principle applies up the scale of passengers on the same booking - each get 20kg 'free' entitlement which can be used in any number of paid for bags across the booking.
I'm pretty sure this is correct - but I'm willing to be put right on anything!
  • Right im officially confuzzled now. Myself, my husband & our infant are travelling to Lanzarote for Christmas. I've paid for ONE bag each way at a cost of Ј18. When I booked, it said this was for one bag UPTO 32kg. Does it actually mean that? Or am I going to be charged extra for anything above 20kg?
