A question about : Competition for jobs is getting very scary!!!

I've been looking since August and like no doubt many others here are applying for tons of jobs, maybe some lucky enough to get interviews...
It's really hit me the last couple of weeks how many people are applying for jobs...
I was hoping for a telesales job down the road, I'd asked at the company before the job even came up. I applied for it and was told they'd had over 80 applications in a few days. Just from a tiny one line text ad in the local paper! All it said was 'Telesales person required for IT company'. I can't imagine how many people apply for the big boxed ads.
I then called to enquire about a local NHS job which the job centre showed me and was supposed to have a deadline of 7th March or something. They said they were overwhelmed by applicants and had to withdraw it about a week ago! That was the first time they've had to withdraw a job like that...
What's even worse is that the Job Centre has told me that now at 6 months I have to go for even NMW jobs. I can imagine many would turn me away as being overqualified as has happened to me many times before...
Aside from that being on NMW would leave me about Ј14 a week after all essential bills to pay for everything else (inc. food and petrol) although tax credits might be possible. It's a real nightmare when you structure your life around one income then have to live on a lot less potentially...
