A question about : Combi boiler Quote? & Best Model

Hi,

ive had a quote for 3 boilers

Baxi duo tec 40kw Ј864.6 + VAT 7 yr
Ideal logic plus 35kw Ј738.95 +Vat 7 yr
Worcester 38CDI Ј1051.27 + Vat 5 yyr

This is just for the boiler not fitted etc

I have approx 80m2 underfloor heating 2 x showers, 1 x bath, 4 x bedrooms with radiators & 2 x large towel radiators

I need it to be man enough for the job, and reliable?!

thanks

  • Im having a new boiler fitted on Wednesday. I'm going for a Combi after MUCH deliberation but I only have 1 bathroom. It was 50/50 whether to go for a standard system boiler with vented cylinder or Combi. In the end the benefits of the combi won over the negatives, but it was close and that was a house with 1 bathroom. There is no way I would be looking at a combi if I had more than one shower. They just won't be "man enough" as you say.
I can't comment on reliability - I'm going with a Vaillant 937 to somewhat mitigate the combi negatives to a small extent. Only thing is that if going for a WB or Vaillant i'd get it fitted by an approved installer to get the extra warranty
  • We are looking to complete on a house purchase shortly, I assume if I get British Gas out for a quote, they'll also take us through the planned usage and then advise?
  • My mum got her boiler with British gas recently and it cost Ј5k which she is paying back via their finance deal. They are definitely not the most cost effective.
  • At best you will get two hot water outlets to operate adequately at any one time. As long as you are happy with that limitation then a combi is fine.
I'm not going to choose your boiler for you though. Any one of them will be fine if properly installed. They are all good boilers. Use British Gas if you want an adequate but expensive installation. There is better value to be had provided you choose a local REPUTABLE installer. If you don't know one then ask at your local plumbers merchants for two or three names of people they'd be happy with, then get detailed quotes and go for the outfit that makes most sense...not necessarily the cheapest.
Its worth getting it done properly. I see the consequences of poor install, like todays Worcester B boiler that needed a new hot water heat exchanger after 6 months as it was blocked as the installer did not flush the system properly. Its not the boilers fault.
  • I'd be wary of British Gas because they can charge a lot more than other firms - so it's best to get some prices in from some local firms too. Also, it's worth seeing if they can offer finance - I got 0% from stl heating, but I'm sure there might be other firms offering the same ?
As for best make - worcester bosch are good, but so are vaillant (only they can be cheaper - but just as good).
  • Yet another thread - this one with the last post over a month old - that you resurrect to plug xxx heating.
