A question about : Co-OP and the tale of age verification

*Sigh* sometimes I dispare, totally and utterly.

I was asked for ID because I wanted to buy chicken chasseur with red wine and herbs. Why was I asked for ID? Because it contains wine!!

Less than 5.5% wine, mixed in with chicken and sauce and all sorts of other stuff so even if I was under 18 I am hardly going to suck the wine out of it and go on the lash am I!

I didn't have any suitable ID for them, despite paying by credit card - and yes you have to be over 21 to have my credit card- the shop assistant said that she couldn't take it as ID as it didn't have a photo on and it might not be mine... And they wouldn't take any of my three government issued ID cards..

Might not be mine!?! Why is she willing to take it at all then if that's what she suspects. She also was willing to say that she thought I was over 18, but I still looked under 30 /

I took great pleasure in leaving all my shopping there and walking out.

While I am sure this is an isolated incident of idiocy it still gets my goat up....

And no I still won't be carrying round any ID other than what I have now!

  • About the first part, regardless of the fact that you would have to, as you put it 'suck the wine out of it', it is still wine. What I think is stupid is having to be over 18 to buy non-alcoholic alcohol because they have around 0.02-0.05% alcoholic content.
I know being asked for I.D. can be frustrating, which government issued ID cards did you have that they didn't accept? A photo on your ID should be a minimum thing, so I stand by them for not accepting a credit card as proof.
  • If treated in this manner, abandon your entire shopping and walk out. If everyone did this, store management would soon curb these jobsworths.
  • There might be 5.5% wine in it, but it's cooked, so there wont be any alcohol in it. I don't get the "yes you look over 18" stuff. You might look under 30, but the law stops you buying alcohol under 18, not under 30.
My son couldn't buy a bar butler for his Dad for Christmas because he's 16. He pointed out that it doesn't have any alcohol in it, and the daft assistant at Argos said "yes, but you might put some in it".
  • I e-mailed ASDA asking if they would take my International Student Card (www.isiccard.com) which you need to supply proof of age to get and this is their reply;
    "Thank you for contacting me.
I can confirm that we accept any proof of age that has a photo and your bate of birth present. I.e. passport, proof of age card, driving licence etc.
Thanks again and I hope this helps, if there is anything else I can help you with please let me know.
    Kind Regards

    ASDA Service Team"
They seem pretty lenient about it, I would have thought the Co-Op would have been the same and had no problem with your Government ID. Maybe they had just never seen one before and thought it was made up?
