A question about : CIFAS on my Equifax report!!

I have just received my Equifax report this morning. My credit card is listed, my current account and 2 mail order catalogues. That's fine.

On the last page there are 2 CIFAS listings for a person who does not live at my address!! Apparently the searches are for credit cards. Will this affect my credit rating? How can I get them removed??

Best answers:

  • When you received the report you should also have got instructions on how to request changes. You want to file a "notice of dissociation".
    https://www.equifax.co.uk/consumer/inacinfo.htm
You may want to get your file from Experian too.
  • I've just checked the CIFAS website, and they say to talk to the company who placed the CIFAS flag on my address. If that is not successful then complain to CIFAS. Which is the correct way?
I also had to file a Notice of Dispute as NTL had searched my file 3 times in one week, after I applied for broadband!
  • hi,
i too have 2 CIFAS entries on my credit report.
i have contacted the companies as the entries are for people that no longer live at my address.
the first thing you should do like said is contact the companies as soon as possible.
these entries will cause a huge hinderence to any apllications that you make from your overdraft to a new credit card BEWARE !
another point pot be aware of the catagory that they have been listed as. next to the entry will be a number which corrisponds to why they have made the listing. these entries will remain on your file and those at your property for 13 months
while you are chasing the companies, my advise is to log a "notice of dispute" with equifax/experian. this will show any future companies looking at your credit file that the matter is being investigated.
i hope this helps as i truely empathise with you.
    Good luck
    Aiden.
  • Do not chase the companies, chase the credit reference agencies!
Unless you ae asking for a notice of dissociation for someone who still lives with you or you were at one time financially linked to (e.g. shared a joint account) they usually get sorted out within 28 days, no questions asked.
  • But this person has never lived at my address! The application was made in July 04. And unless he was hiding under the bed I did not see him! And I have no financial association with this person.
The CIFAS webiste advises to contact the company. Forum members advise to contact the reference agencies.
    Which should I do?
  • i understand that you are being told to contact the credit agencies which would seem to make sense.
Experian/Equifax only report information that they are given by the companies in question.
they will be more than happy to raise a querey but they do not have the ability to remove any CIFAS entries without there instruction.
CIFAS is a completley different company that work along side the credit agencies.
refer direct to the source- the company that logged application. if the person does not live at your address and you were living there when they logged the entry then i would recommend going on to the CIFAS website where you can request the information of why the company logged the entry. this costs Ј10. as CIFAS report fraud i think this would be best, as well as contacting the comapny!
  • I have posted two Notices of Dispute to Equifax and they will liase with the finance companies. They have 28 days to finalise the matter before I can complain against their decision. I will wait 4-6 weeks until I order my Experian file as Equifax will pass the new info to them. This will make sure my file is up-to-date before I start questioning that one!
  • i think that this is the best thing to do for now rather than go "all guns blazing"
mine case has been on going for 5months
    again good luck
    aiden
  • I have detailed the problems on https://forum.moneysavingexpert.com/c...num=1093018633
    Advice would be appreciated!!!
