A question about : CHEAP puncture protection for mountain bike?

Hi all, I've got an old rubbish bike that I paid Ј10 for just to ride to the shops and back.

I keep getting punctures all the time! I bought that slime stuff which cost about Ј10 (the same price as the bike ha!) but it's not helping, had to walk home again last night. The tyres are a bit low on tread but not bald.

I see this tape stuff but again it's another Ј10 and reviews don't seem too good?

Any recommendations etc?
I don't care about weight etc, just don't want any more punctures! Always seems to be thorns.
Maybe you've done a DIY job to sort this yourself?

Thanks title=Cool

Best answers:

  • Buy some tyres with puncture protection. I can't advise on specific types without knowing wheel size but anything with a kevlar belt should help.
Other than that, carry a spare inner tube or two and be ready to repair your puncture on the go.
  • Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres are the best I've tried for puncture protection, but they will probably cost more than you paid for the bike...
That tape stuff looks OK as long as you fit it properly. There's also this one: https://www.wiggle.co.uk/panaracer-flataway-tyre-liner/. Bear in mind that you're probably talking Ј10 per wheel.
  • I very rarely get punctures but would get them regularly from passing a thorny hedge on a towpath, presumably from when the hedge was trimmed. I even got a puncture while pushing my bike past this hedge!. If you can spot the thorny hedge and avoid it, this may solve the problem.
  • Are you running with enough pressure in the tyres?
