A question about : Cheap but good sonic cat repellent

Anyone know of any cheap ones? I have had a look for the catwatch one which seems to of had good reviews but they seem very pricey.

All the local cats use our garden as the toilet - not happy!

  • Sorry - but in my experience they don't work.....
A friend bought one and found it made no difference to the cats in her garden.
Our next-door-neighbour has one. Although humans are not supposed to hear it, the sound drives me, hubby & especially the step-kids, round the bend. The neighbours are getting on in years and a little hard of hearing, so say they can't hear a thing (interestingly the people who can hear it are about 50% of those we know - we did an experiment asking everyone who came to the house - sometimes when it was on, and sometimes when it was off!). However, it has absolutely NO EFFECT on my cat, or any other of the neighbourhood cats!
My gran used to use lemon & orange peel, as cats don't like citrus smells. They also don't like horse manure (but then again - neither do most people!).
I've use 'Get Off My Garden' I think it's called - green gel stuff - to keep the cat away from where I've put in sees. It seems to work OK.
    Good luck!

  • PLEASE don't get one!!! Like FairyElephant I can hear these things too and I get the most horrendous migraines if I have to be near one for more than a few minutes... As for humans not being able to hear them then possibly but I can hear them!
Oh and my 2 cats... don't pay ANY attention to them - they have even been spotted snoozing on top of one... bless... Because the people who had it couldn't hear it we ended up getting the council out to make them remove it - they did and then put it back a few weeks later... so we snuck into their garden and disabled the speaker on it... to my knowledge they have no idea but it was never fixed...
  • have you tried pepper dust? or even just cheap ground pepper should set them sneezing!!! also i have found my cat HATES coffee grounds maybe you could try using them as they are good for the soil as well! or you could try putting some short cut bits of gorse/holly or any prickly bush where they like to go that should put them off!! but will only work if a small area
  • Thank you guys for all of your help - don't think i will bother getting one!
Will go and get some of the gel stuff and see how that goes.
Tine.........you are naughty but totally agree with you - would do the same thing! Wonder if it works on the next doors kids...............! The angel 5 year old girl twins.......known in our house as Ronnie & Reggie!!
  • them sonic things work on my garden.
  • I use the green gel stuff 'Get-off' from local £1 shop and it seems to work.
  • I soak old teabags in jeyes fluid. they hate the smell. Also i water it on to areas that they've used as a toilet as it sterilises the soil, neutralises the smell and keeps them away.
Not sure if it'll neutralise next doors kids though
  • If you can put gravel on your garden this will stop them c***ping cos they like to dig a little hole and then fill it in afterwards!!!
Some people fill empty plastic bottles with water and stand them round the garden.
Another one is to put a couple of mirrors up.
The Sylvester Stallone answer is to get one of those giant pump up water pistols and sit and wait for them to appear.........they hate getting splattered and soon get the message
  • Hehehehe...........
    Told you it works......
Best £3 you ever spent DKLS !!!!!!!!!!
  • It's interesting to read the opposing views here. My neighbour has 2 of them and i can't hear them but i have 2 sons under the age of 4 and you've got me worried now! If you do a google search you'll find loads of companies like this www.primrose-london.co.uk/cat_repeller.php advertising them for sale - there seem to be different makes at different prices - shop around for the best deal. Or you could probably get them cheaper on ebay. I think garden centres have them in stock now if you can't wait for the post man to deliver.
  • I was sent here from another similar thread and thought this might be of interest:-https://www.robertdyas.co.uk/img/products/140530_p.jpg
The Big Cheese Ultrasonic Cat Repeller
Sonic repeller gun with laser-light sighting. To cats it's the audible equivalent of a cold bucket of water!
Repels cats, dogs, squirrels and other nuisance animals without harm
Trigger action - sights and shoots target animals over 20 metres away
Dual sonic/ultrasonic switching for use without dection or disturbance of neighbours

As I started this thread off, thought you might like an up-date.
    It appears to work!
Having directed the thing at the offender, I aimed, with it in silent mode, and I saw an immediate recognition, it then sped off.
The following day I saw the same animal, went outside, and there was this "oh, here he comes again" recognition and off it went.
  • I'm writing this for anyone like us who has only just discovered this site and has their neighbour's cats using their garden as a toilet. I have to write because the gravel thing is untrue. Most of the garden of the house we rent is covered in gravel. It hasn't stopped the neighbour's 3 cats from using it as their personal convenience. Having children this does not impress me. And all our love of cats has sharply gone by the wayside. So, gravel is not the answer; if it was, we would be blissfully happy and still loving cats. I will be trying the gel if my squirting doesn't work. Thanks to everyone who posted suggestions as no one we know has managed to come up with anything that wouldn't involve being arrested.lol!
  • Try this product from Amazon. The reviews rave about it, and if you read down them one guy even suggests backing it up by peeing in the area that gets fouled! i'm going to get one to see if it works as well as they all say.

  • We have had the same problem since we moved here almost 8 years ago!
We have tried all sorts of stuff. Part of the front garden that was especially a problem and very smelly we got rid of the grass and put stone chippings. This is what we do in the rest of the garden after trying everything else. In the beds we now buy green coloured sticks from the garden centre and stick them into the earth between plants so that the cats don't have anywhere to sit. It doesn't look too bad especially in the summer. We also try to keep the ground damp, they don't seem to like that. We shoo them away whenever we see them so they know they are not welcome and we go around the garden regularly with a plastic bag to pick up the deposits. If we leave it, it seems to multiply!
It's a lot of work but the only way our family can feel safe in and enjoy our garden.
I guess cat owners don't realise what a problem it is, if they did they wouldn't have 3 or 4 cats per household in a residential area.
    Good Luck.
  • What's always bothered me with these things (sonic repellants) is if you can't hear them how do you know they are doing anything at all and more to the point how do you know if its broken
Snake oil comes to mind
  • The catwatch has a light which comes on when it's working. It's true that you will be able to hear it when you're close to it but if I'm working in the garden I move it out of range (this saves on batteries as well). The catwatch works on our local cats but is pricey at around Ј50. It's been tested by the RSPB and they also reccomend it.
  • I have used sonic pest controllers with varied success (I probably need to change the batteries! ). If you go on ebay you can find catwatch and other products relatively cheap.
