There are a number of charities that may help with bankruptcy costs and fees depending on eligibility. You will usually need the assistance of a recognised Debt charity in completing applications and be patient can take a while to process too.

Best answers:

  • EDF are one of many charitable trusts run by Charis Grants.
British Gas, Npower and EDF charitable trusts are all part of Charis.
  • BEN (Automotive industry) charity also help with insolvency fee grants.
  • The Retail Trust have (in the past) given out grants also but haven't used them recently so can't confirm 100%.
  • Have made the thread a sticky so it doesn't disappear also.
FWIW, I've never known Payplan to give out grants for BR fees. In my experience they've told people to go to CAB etc for help with BR and grants...
  • UNISON's welfare charity helped me with the court fee. Took a few weeks and a lot of checking of my financial circumstances which is normal. You need to be a member of Unison. Your local branch office may have a welfare officer to support your application or you can apply direct to remain anonymous.
  • rowland hill fund also.
  • The Shipwrecked Mariners Society have never let me down for a bankruptcy fee for an eligible applicant. They aim to help the seafaring and former seafaring community and their dependents - no you don't have to of ever been shipwrecked!

  • Christians Against Poverty said they were able to help me, but not until March as they were really busy. And no, you dont have to be a Christian.
  • Thank you all, added to the list
  • Hello, wondering if you could help me with this. I am leaving the country due to a family emergency and have debts in the UK which I didn't think I would be able to go BR as I do not have the money, so firstly I would like to say thanks for this thread as I did not know I could get help with the fees. However you say that it will take a while and I am living the country next week (obviously family emergency can't wait) so is this something that I can do from abroad? Is it even possible to apply to bank-corrupcy from a different country?
  • I thought Ben had withdrawn this facility.
  • The Charity for Civil Servants, it used to be known as The Civil Service Benevolent Fund.
They will help with bankruptcy fees for people who work or have worked in any CS departments. I used to work for DWP and they helped me.
