A question about : Cat litter

Hi We have 1 cat and 2 kittens that we recently gave a home too. The cat litter is costing me a small fortune, does anyone out there, make their own.
I have tried wood shavings that i can get for free but it sticks to their paws and is walked all over the house plus they liked rolling in it. Failing that would anyone like 2 very mis-behaved farrel kittens. They have eaten all my tomato plants, chase the adult cat all over the house and are a pain in the ....
Thankyou in advance from an exasperated kitten owner.

Best answers:

  • soil from the garden
  • I would actually be interested in this!! We use Catsan for my cat, which is quite expensive, but she's not too keen on using any other litter. Also Catsan says it contains the odour, but that's not true. When I come downstairs in the morning I can always smell that sh's done a we in it!!!
  • The "best" is the clumping stuff from Sainsbury's. Contains odour and clumps really well, so v.easy to use. Unfortunately it costs an arm and a leg.
I've discovered Lidl's cat litter. It's clumping too though the lumps that come out tend to break so it can be slightly messy. However at Ј1.89 for a massive big bag (about twice as much as Tesco's economy bag) it is really good value. Over here (N.I. it was a Cheaper offer recently at 99p so I bought loads!).
Otherwise the Tesco cheapo stuff, Ј1.25 or so, isn't too bad though it's non-clumping.
According to various articles I've read to change the cat litter for fussy puddy cats start mixing the new into the old v.gradually increasing the amount of new until you get to a point where you can discontinue the old. It might take a while if your kitty is really smart.
  • My furbaby is extremely fussy over what he'll do-do in!
In Asda a pk of their "own brand" litter was actually equal to "Bob Martin" (? the famous brand chappie?) recycled stuff - yes, even by per k weight.
It's great stuff! Much cheaper than Catsan; superior to Asda's own brand and Mr I'm-to-posh-to-do-it-in-cheapstuff is well happy to have a do-do, wheeeshhh and scratch in it
  • I buy Litter Purrfect, I buy it from Costco (not seen it anywhere else)- but I'm not sure how much it is, but it is fantastic at clumping and lasts for ages. I have two big cats - (only two years old, but they like their food - and what goes in must come out!!)
If you don't like the smell, maybe one of these will work...

I bought one to stop the litter going everywhere as mine like to kick it out the box, or to paw the wall - it kept their paws clean, but didn't cover up their business very well....howerver, it also works at keeping the smell in!!!!
  • Cat Breeders secret .. use Layers Pellets.
It comes in large sacks from Pet City and farmers-type shops. A large sack will cost you about Ј5 and will last absolutely ages. Use the pellets quite thickly and it'll 'clump' into a 'pancake' which is easy to scoop out. The pellets are very good at absorbing smells and any liquid.
Yes, Layers Pellets is, in reality, chicken food! So a *major* advantage is that if kittens eat it, as they occasionally do when investigating their surroundings, it won't hurt them as it's already food. There have been very bad outcomes from kittens eating 'super-clumping' cat litter....
  • A covered litter tray does work best plus it gives the cats a little privacy which I have found over the years with different cats that they do like!
Personally I use the wood pellets which are fragranced and much nicer to handle. More expensive but well worth the extra to me. As my cats go outside its really only for emergency use if they are stuck inside or just now when there is snow on the ground and they don't want to go outside
  • I was also going to suggest a covered litter tray as one of my cats uses it. You can put it outside so that you don't get the smells. It also helps weans the cat off using a litter tray.
I have often wondered if you can use a paper shredder to shred your financial documents (all MSEphiles should do this) and then put them in the litter tray. Of course they may stick to the cat's' feet!
  • Ah the shredder, well we also have guinea pigs and my daughter comes to the office every so often and spends some time shredding the contents of the bin and the guinea pigs and hamster love the result.
Cheap and recycling in one go. Sadly, today one of our guinea pigs died very suddenly so not a happy daughter tonight
  • May sound silly but you can train them to use the human loo ! just put the litter tray in the bowl when puss needs toilet. Then gradual take it away over time after the cat is used to the idea. Also obviously dont leave it in there when cat does not need to go.The cat then associates this as the place to do the toliet.I found this out by accident when i had a cat who liked to pee in the bath drain and tried the toilet himself ! I then i read that some cats get trained to do this .Never had a cat since who has repeated it. I suppose it is quite good for fussy cats who get a bit worked up at smelly litter trays. Only problem is when the cat needs to spend a penny at the same time as you - well I suppose we all know who would win !
  • Thank you all for your replies
Cat72 i would love to be able to train them to go to the toilet unfortunatley they like drinking the contents also the kittens are brother and sister and do everything together-i mean it, pooing and weeing! thats my problem they go in litter tray together so i end up with a real mess and having to change the litter alot.
Mustang i think i will try your idea if i dare (its not a send up is it?) will let you know how it goes. In the mean time have decided to start letting them out, they are 6 months old now and they were wild for 12 week. I started this morning, they went out for 5 mins on to top step and then back in to cause havoc. Anyway thanks for your ideas but more are appreciated if posted
  • cant you train them to use next doors garden?
    ours does all the time
  • hi 1jim
I dread the time when they do use next doors because they are already fed up with us............ then again............................................. .........
only kidding we like a peaceful life don't like upsetting folk, oh well. both kittens went in the garden for about 20 mins this morning but were not impressed because their feet got wet, they were trying to alternate between paws to walk, really funny to watch. I'm going to try them out for longer each day, failing that i will make my son buy litter he is the one that brought them home, he is too soft for his own good.
  • My Daughters cat who's 9 months old goes out to play then comes back in to use the litter tray. Only likes the hard litter stuff got her the papper sort a while ago has it was lighter to carry and we have not got a car put she would only wee in it the rest she did on the floor beside the tray
  • Cats can be very sensitive to new cat litter. The way to get over this is to gradually introduce new litter mixed with the old. Gradually increase the amount of new litter and decrease the amount of old litter.
  • Hi folks, has anyone got experience of using shredded paper as cat litter?
Our adorable monster likes neither granular nor wood wood-based litter. He likes compost but I don't like the resultant mud on the floor and carpet! He also likes the recycled-paper litter from Morrisons but this has just gone up in price.
We currently have a straight-cut shredder but were wondering if it's worth trying to get a cheap cross-cut shredder and using the resultant bits for litter. Cheap (free!), environmentally sound and would make sure no-one reads what's been shredded!
Has anyone tried this and, if so, is it suitable?
Thanks and happy solstice/season's greetings to you all!
  • Why can't he go out into the garden to do his business??
  • He's a rescue cat (from the Cats Protection League) and refuses to use the cat-flap or even go out of our flat. We've tried to encourage him to but I'm not going to force him poor love.
ps, wish I had a garden!
