A question about : Cash, credit card or travellers cheques in Thailand?

We are travelling to Thailand in January just wondering what everyone's thoughts were about the currency format to take? Obviously we will require some cash but I wouldn't be carrying around 2weeks worth of money. I assume we'll pay for hotel with credit card but what way do the charges measure up with regards withdrawing cash or using tcs?

Best answers:

  • Don't change any in the UK.
Get a Halifax Clarity Credit Card and use ATMs. There is a 150/180 baht charge for ATM use unless you can find an Aeon Bank one, but you get the best exchange rate.
If you can get fee free Travellers Cheques then they are a reasonable option, but not if you have to pay a premium for them. There is a 33 baht charge to cash a cheque so you are better getting high denomination ones to minimise this.
  • A follow up to my earlier email, I looked into prepaid credit cards, but not really sure of how they work?
Kalixa seems to be free would this be correct, with a Ј2.25 fee when taking out of an ATM?
Am i right in thinking we would load up the card with say, Ј1000 before we leave and then just use away at it...same as a debit card?
Sorry have no experience in these would love someone to clarify for me.
Also if you could give me an idea of how long it takes for card to come out - I've been through the application process and can't see a time frame anywhere. We are going in 2 weeks so time is short.
    Thanks
