A question about : Carpet underlay and gripper

Just priced a carpet with Carpetright and the underlay and gripper came to more than the carpet:confused:

Any ideas where I can buy both items at a realistic price?

Most internet companies in England do not deliver to NItitle=Mad

  • In my opinion you'd be better going to a smaller, local carpet firm, you should get better value on the underlay and gripper rods and that would make up for paying a bit extra for the carpet. You'll also get better quality in a lot of cases too.
I know someone in the flooring business and he wouldn't be a fan of Carpetright, Allied Carpets or any of the big chains.
  • I have done the same and I found the Martin Phillps was about Ј5 per metre ( there are different grades ) and the griper rods i got from B&Q also about a Ј5 for a pack. If you want to buy the metal strips for the doors also B&Q but DON'T buy the door size stripes as these are about Ј6 _ Ј7 buy the longer 2 metre stripes for about Ј9 and cut down.
If you need a carpet knee kicker these can be got in Argos for Ј29, cheaper can be got in B&Q but don't bother with them.
    Good luck
  • You can buy both on ebay
  • I used a company on ebay, phoned them up and done a great deal. I had the second best underlay for less than Ј2 a square metre, delivered. Carpertrights cheapest was Ј5.99. The rods etc can also be gotten from there.
  • The carpet underlay company funnily enough 01202 813000 is their number and if you tell them what you want etc they can do you a deal, not much haggling in their profits but next day delivery etc.
  • Don't skimp on the underlay, a chap, who worked for a carpet manufacturer, once told me that it was better to have a cheap carpet on a quality underlay than have an expensive carpet on a cheap underlay.

  • I have to second the point re getting good underlay. The last time we bought carpet was 11 years ago for the stairs and landing. The carpet saleman recommended a quality underlay and further recommended we buy enough to put 2 layers on the stairs to keep the carpet good. The carpet fitter used some choice language but it was an excellent job and the carpet still looks like new.
The only problem with this is I've gone off the carpet and DH won't let me buy another but I'm working on it
  • Hi have just been pricing underlay on tradepriced.co.uk and notice that delivery to NI is Ј27.50...is this what everyone else is charged? and if so are their prices cheap enough to justify this? Sorry have no idea what underlay costs as havent been carpet shopping yet, wanted to arm myself with some information before I get talked into anything!
  • Good underlay is usually dearer than the carpet, the cheapest that most carpet places do is Ј5.99 per square metre. The rods etc usually cost Ј29.99 from your carpet store too.
  • sorry to bother you again but I have just found a company called www.carpet-underlay-shop.co.uk who only charge Ј6.95 delivery to NI!! And their prices seem very cheap too, but I want to know if anyone knows if this sounds like a good deal before I order:
Tredaire Dreamwalk Underlay 15.07 sqm (11mm thick, 2.7 tog rating and 46db noise rating, delivered for Ј53.87 including VAT.
This is quite a bit cheaper than Tradepriced.co.uk for their Tredaire Elite which seems to be roughly same spec and their price was Ј111. Am I missing something???
