A question about : Car Insurance Is a Legal Scam

This year I am paying 6000 a year for Hire and reward insurance for a Minibus hopefully it goes down after a year due to no claims etc. First year etc,

Anyway i asked to Add someone after being told when taking it out I could add someone like my mother at some point. and it would not be any extra.

I wish to have a friend on there who has considerable more driving experience and Older than me and drives school Buses for Living.
Yet they Want to Charge me an Extra 900 on top of my policy to Add him. If Anything the risk is less due to his experience that he would be bringing as well as splitting the driving on some longer drives.

I just don't understand how they can justify an extra 900 from now till the end of the policy which is not even a full year.

Best answers:

  • Insurers work on statistics not logic. Relationship between the insured, vehicle owner and named drivers is a common question and from what I remember of looking at rating tables unrelated NDs are considered higher risk than one related to the insured/ vehicle owner.
You can try and work out your own rational as to why in their experience family on average have less incidents than friends/ business partners etc.
Ultimately if you were given advice and you feel they gave you bad advice then register a complaint. Assuming you fit within the limits of the vSME definition for the FOS then escalate to them if you are unhappy with their response or they dont respond within 8 weeks.
  • Well we don't know what age you are, what incidents you have been involved in over the years.
Also we don't know what the person you wish to add on your insurance has been up to.
I would expect the high insurance add on is for the reason that you are adding an unknown risk (in the insurance company view) , to a very possible high payout if he has an accident . Think of how many people could sue you if they were in the minibus.
Also why must you assume that you are hard done by because you have to pay more out. The point is you have only driven a minibus with this company for a year. And in my view it is a high risk if you do have an accident.
As for all insurances for cars etc., you have to PROVE to an insurance company you are a worth while risk. That is what no claim rebates are for.
  • OP, judging by your other posts about this minibus/venture, I think you need professional help on this.
Is it possible that a driver is limited by working hours so an additional driver will result in the vehicle being used more and be abroad more? Adding your mother is different from adding a professional driver/employee.
If you were told you could add a driver for no extra and now being told the opposite then put in a complaint. Be cautious though, your previous posts suggest your choice of insurer is limited so I don't think you want to fall out with them.
  • For Just me I can see the risk is Great, I am 25 with No Insurance History, Out the Country Uk No claims expired
Friend 27 No Claims or accidents and 8 Years with PSV licence.
    Drives for a Bus Company.
    Risk should me much less
He is there purely for Longer drives (which I will be driving by myself) and so I can have time off.
    and his Experience.
I do wish it was the Vehicle was Insured (Like Canada) and not the driver .
  • The other risk of having multiple drivers is that the vehicle is likely to be on the road more.
