A question about : cancel auto enrolment

Hi All,

I have just noticed my salary was cut this month and a day after that the hr guy came to say I am now enroled on this scheme and they had a letter informing them if they do not enrol etc they will get fined.

so I asked for my enrolment to be canceled and get refunded for whatever has been taken this month .

the hr in here are shockingly behind with things and am thinking it may be 1 or 2 month before they cancel it.

so if I end up lossing payment for 2-3 month and it is then cancelled , will i get all of it back ?

Best answers:

  • I am no expert, but I don't believe that if they have put that money into your pension you won't be able to get it back.
Can I ask why you don't wont to auto0entrol, do you already have your retirement income sorted?
  • You cancel the auto enrollment now if you really want. The rules do not allow it to be cancelled before t y e first payment is taken.
If you contact your employer or the pension provider they are legally bound to refund the money.
But the question is "why do you not want to join the scheme"? Is the employer contributing that you are going to throw away?
You need to think very hard about this.
  • You have to contact the pension provider to opt-out, not your employer. Now that you have had a deduction from your pay, you should be set up in the scheme by the end of this month and they will write to you with details of how you can opt out in the next few weeks. You will then have a month to opt out.
You will then get your money back in your next payslip.
Opting out is daft, unless you really cannot afford it, as you are just throwing away employer money towards your retirement. Think carefully before you opt out.
  • You can opt-out before the first payment is taken, but not before you joined the scheme.
The person you need to contact depends on the scheme. It's not your employer (correct) but in many cases the secretary to the scheme is the pensions manager, therefore the pension manager can accept it on behalf of the trustees.
You must opt out within 30 days of joining. This is not the same as within 30 days of the money being taken. If you opt out during the opt out window, you will be treated as having never joined the scheme. The exact method of opting out will be in the communications sent to you or given to you upon joining the company.
If you leave the scheme (i.e. after the opt out window), you're still entitled to a refund of contributions until the Pensions Act 2014 comes into force.
You're turning down free money if you opt out.
