A question about : BT contract ending; want to stay with BT. Any recent haggling successes to report?

Hello,

I currently have unlimited high-speed Infinity fibre broadband and free evening and weekend calls. I don't have and don't want any TV packages.

My contract is ending in a couple of weeks and I'd like to save a bit of money but I've been completely satisfied with the service over the past three years, both with the speed (consistently good and fast) and service downtime (minimal). In particular BT's upload speed is much better than Virgin.

Given the dependability of the service I've had for three years, I really don't want the hassle of changing. When you look at regular non-introductory prices from other suppliers, it's only pennies difference for the similar packages. Obviously though, if I speak to them, I'd have to pretend to be seriously considering leaving. I'm in an area with tons of competition so I could take time to list all those offers to have to hand during the call.

On the other hand, if there are no reports of anyone having had any luck with being offered good deals and reductions to stay with BT, I could save myself the haggling effort.

I'd love to hear the experiences of existing BT customers who have tried haggling with BT at the end of a contract, and who got something tasty to persuade them to remain with BT.

Many thanks!

  • Sorry, no answer. I could have written the same request. BT urged me to re-contract for another year in consideration of taking BT Sport "free of charge". I said no because BT Sport is of no value to me, but I was told that I could haggle at the time of renewal for something else. [Football hater]
  • am in the same boat as you contract is nearly up 10th feb i have unlimited broadband no tv paying Ј17 pm plus line rental, been talking with BT Not offering nowt been with then from 2006 Even my homehub is a 2,They have never gave me an upgrade, so i have and got my MAC Code,Time to look and Move on.good luck to you.Ps They offer NEW Customers very good Deals from Ј7 pm or even infin from Ј10, but not us old ones,no loyalty from BT.
  • Every year at renewal, I find out what other competitors will offer me then I ring BT with the info to cancel. And every year I get a discount off my unlimited Infinity package. But you must get past the first line advisor and be put through to cancellations, as they have the real discount powers. Good luck.
  • Hi, I'm in the same boat, just called hoping for a reduction and it was a few quid a month less. Think last year they wanted to move people to fibre optic so gave good discounts, now they don't seem bothered.
  • Ask for your MAC and see if they get back with a deal .
  • BT blew their wad on BT Sport expecting everyone to come flocking to them to get it for free with their broadband but it just didn't happen. Now they've got to figure out how to start clawing that money back, hence the recent phone line rental increase and lack of deals for existing customers.
  • There are a lot Better deals than BT out there ? A lot Cheaper to,am leaving BT also.after 19 years, won't give me Nowt only MAC Code,so that's a good Deal.
  • We football haters may be in the minority but we are offered a service that is promoted as "free" which is quite obviously not free. Therefore the price of our broadband and telephone service are loaded (very expensively) with the cost of a service that we do not want or need.
Football lovers, of course, think that football players deserve to be highly salaried and feel that these fair rewards should be factored into broadband pricing.
Perhaps, in time, BT will charged football fans for the BT Sport and charge the rest of us a non-loaded price.
  • I contacted them and they reduced the broadband price from Ј15.99 to Ј5.65 late last year. It did start a further 12 month tie in. Like others in this thread I was not interested in BT Sport but getting them to tun it off proved impossible. I only wanted them to do that so I don't get caught by it suddenly becoming chargeable.
  • Found out BT Had done an upgrade on my BT Sport ? to HD Sport extra Ј3 P/M i NEVER Asked for that,? so had to phone them up to Stop it.
  • I've been on Infinity 2 for a couple of years - finally got round to calling and requesting my MAC code.
After some time, I was offered a Ј7/month discount off - so now paying Ј21 for the same service.
  • Why don't you try Plusnet (Owned by BT) seem to being decent deals at the moment.
  • Ok, I have renegotiated. I deliberately cancelled BT Sport some months ago. The conversation today was quite an ordeal, but my positioning was that I didn't want BT Sport (I hate football and have no interest in other sport footage).
They told me how good BT was and tactically I agreed. They explored the research I had done into competitors. I majored upon Plusnet pricing. They told me that Plusnet wansn't as good and their service would be slower, and I tactically accepted that they may be right.
We ended up agreeing an overall bill reduction of Ј5.80 per month in consideration of a 12 month contract. Caller display added.
I accepted that this was a fair deal in all of the circumstances. There's a place to stop with a negotiation and I didn't push the boat out further.
I think that BT has been fair and I didn't really want to cancel. Ј5.80 is around about the value that I estimate that BT puts upon the BT Sport service. BT has created a problem for itself in providing a package that is not of universal value.
  • My contract's up at the end of this month, currently paying Ј17 for standard unlimited broadband, no extra's. I pay the line rental saver upfront.
Contacted BT today and was quoted a grand total of Ј335 for 12 months to stay as I am, this includes the line rental saver. I declined and was transferred to another person who said the absolute lowest they could do is Ј5.85 a month, with the line rental saver = Ј240 for 12 months.
I've compared the other main ISP's:
    Sky - Ј196 (12 months)
    Plusnet - Ј221 (12 months)
    Talk Talk - Ј321 (18 months)
Slightly nervous about switching as I've had hardly any problems with BT, & the rare occasion I have they've always fixed the issue quickly.
Any feedback on the above providers appreciated.
