A question about : Brighton & Hove specific savings

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if there is any interest in a thread just about savings in Brighton & Hove?

I know that working full time I find it hard to keep track of who is doing what, and a thread for any locals might help?

Examples are currently:
HaHa Bar Ј10 off Ј20 meal
Strada free meal with voucher from current Glamour magazine
Gourmet Burger Kitchen buy 1 get 1 free
Sainsburys London road have 'I can't believe it's not butter' BOGOF
Co-Op London Road have half price Grolsh beer (I think it's Grolsh...)
Veggie Grocer on Portland road (Hove end opposite small Co-op) has huge box of strawberries for Ј1 today
These are just ideas and I wanted to test the waters! title=Thanks,

Other ideas might be if anyone spots a good deal at M&S, BHS, restaurants etc etc...

  • Hi EL...great idea! I'm a bit further west than you & closer to Chichester. I do envy those folks with Poundstretcher & Home bargains & the like
I frequent Barnham Trading Post about once a month, that nestles just outside the railway station. The prices are pretty good on the whole but you do need to be aware of what you can get in the supermarkets IYSWIM. I was tempted to get three tins of toms for Ј1 but I can get ones I KNOW we like for around 20p a tin in MrM. But then I also picked up a horseshoe gammon joint @ Ј3:99 per kilo
Still--nice shop that predominantly sells groceries, bit of local-ish veg & some bits of furniture upstairs. I also noticed yesterday they have a web-site--haven't looked yet cuz just this minute remembered about it
    www.barnhamtradingpost.com
  • Thanks BigMumma, I know, may not be many of us here but we could share what we learn... I am pretty central I must admit, and with no car, so no choice gammon for me! Will take a peek at their site though x
  • This is my first post and I just wanted to say I think it's a great idea to share Brighton and Hove specific savings. I am based off the Lewes Road, also with no car, but I get about a bit, not afraid to travel for a Bargain. I'm going shopping today so I'll let you know if I see any moneysaving bargains!
  • Hi myzerz - me too! I am near the Co-op area off Lewes road, so tend to shop there and also at the big Sainsburys and the open market. Occasionally I get the special offers at Somerfield but not much else there.
The open market is great for free frange eggs - these are just Ј0.95 for 6. I tend to get 2 boxes at a time and I then return the empty boxes to them to they can re-use them. I also get lemons (Ј0.25), garlic (Ј0.25), peppers (Ј0.50-Ј0.60 I think) there as they tend to be cheaper than the local supermarkets.
This week I got 2 of the special offer lean mince packs from Somerfield, just Ј1.75 for 400g. One was made into a chilli which does 3 dinners for the 2 of us, the other has been frozen to make some homemade burgers.
Yesterday I also realised that the Co-Op still have a loyalty dividend card, had never been mentioned by any staff (I thought they did away with this card years ago). Turns out they still do it and you get the dividend twice a year. I use the Co-Op for lots of little bits of occasional shopping so makes sense to get the card - I signed up online yesterday.
I have a pricebook that I have been putting together for 3 months now, absed on local and online prices. It also includes ALDI for some items. If you want to see it & more info, click on my username and it will take you to my blog x
  • Any ideas what times the open market is open I used to live near there but am now further away so would have to make a special trip (but have a car)
Where is the egg stall in the market? London Road end or Ditchling Road end? It's been years since I was in the market - have strong memories of mum making us go into the "stinky fish tunnel" when we were little
My tip for really good quality fish unfortunately needs a car (although they do apparently deliver too) - Springs at Edburton (near Poinings).
  • Hi newlywed the egg place is on th London road side, they also sell cheese which is sometimes good value. I only looked at their parmesan and think that this is better value at ALDI. The cheddar is better value at Somerfield, when they do the 400g for £2 offer, who also do lean tuna and mince meat regularly on good offers.
They open most days apart from Sunday and Monday but the only day I can get there is Saturday - they seem to close 3ish or so.
Sadly we have no car so it's the open market for us...
Welcome Debbie72 - the more of us the merrier to save cash!
  • This is a great idea EL - well done . I live near the Royal Sussex County and work part time at the bottom of Elm Grove.
As you know I'm a great fan of the Portland Road veg man. I can also vouch for our wonderful butcher in St Georges Rd, Bramptons (Kemp Town) from whom I have learnt so much about cheaper cuts of meat since we took the decision to not buy meat via a supermarket anymore.
I will keep my eye out for anything useful I can suggest.
I keep meanig to pop over to the open market as I work so close and perhaps I will now, as we get through quite a lot of eggs.

EDIT for those with cars, can i recommend PetrolPrices.com - it sends you a weekly email with the 5 cheapest petrol station near where you live (or work). It's very good.
  • Hi BB - good to see you here x
I use the butcher at London road entrance of the open market as it's nearest to me, but they are always so busy I get no time to ask questions about the meat... maybe earlier would be an idea ha ha...
  • Hi newlywed and thanks for the info - rarely go to Portslade apart from when I need bits from ALDI. I found that their pesto was good for £0.99 and also their parmesan at £1.99. There will at some point be an ALDI on London road, so let's see when that finally happens (was meant to be early 2008, ha ha, glad we didn't hold our breath).
However on the weekend I found that ASDA at the marina do parmesan for £2 so have bought a few packs...
Tesco have today launches a range of goods which are intended to beat the likes of ALDI so may be worth considering those if you prefer not to buy the 'Value' type ranges.
We got a counter top freezer finally yesterday, for £20 second hand, let's see what difference that makes. I figure by Xmas it will have paid for itself, then in January onwards will start making us real savings.
I now have a pricebook in Excel for all local shops etc - it's only one sheet that I keep in my purse so very handy and I just scribble updates on it, then update on the PC. If anyone would like it feel free to pm me your e-mail addy. Took a few hours but will save us loads in the longterm and thought you guys might like it too x
  • PS: ALso be careful about eating eggs every day - I think the recommendation is no mroe than 3 per week due to cholestrol levels? Do check it out...
  • Thanks - but it's actually very debatable

  • Just saw this thread and saying hi
Live off the upper lewes road near the old vic (shut now!).
Am a bit lazy when it comes to shopping and tend just to go to sainsburys on lewes road but will definitely keep an eye here for any deals that you have kindly posted and if I see anything of interest on those rare occasions I go further afield i'll post it here as well
  • hi there, great thread much needed in this expensive city of ours,
im just up the road from the open market, the thai shop in there is great for cheap exotic ingredients to liven up any meal, and the veg stalls are far cheaper than the local supermarkets.
My great eating out for cheap tip is Pompoko the traditional japanese restaurant on church st, £4-5 for a great one bowl meal, and good for birthdays as you can take your own wine and pay only £1 corkage!!!
  • evening brightonites . Thaks very much for various tips. I notice asda are selling skimmed UHT at 41p per lt now, for those who make HM yogurt .
Could anyone recommend the cheapest place to buy lentils?
  • Welcome Waspeze and afterglow!
Good to have you on board as well and fab suggestion re Pompoko - trying to work out where that is... my geography is terrible - is that Church st in Hove?
Waspeze I am off Lewes road too and use that Sainsburys too. Plus there is a good Turkish deli on Lewes road also just past the Co-Op, I mostly just get spices from them though as they are just Ј0.99p per bag. Hummus is also good, keep meaning to make my own but he does big tubs, which I then separate into smaller tubs and freeze...
Brighton Belle - I pay around Ј0.80p per 500g so Ј1.60 per kg for red lentils. Great to know if anyone finds any better deals! Also wish ASDA was closer to me... got 4 packs of semi-skimmed milk last time I went on the Ј2 for 4 deal. I suppose it would make sense to get the skimmed maybe for yoghurt...
  • Thanks for that BB must check Taj out then! I have only been in once or twice, if you have any other snippets of info do let us know
I noticed today that Somerfield on London road seem to have salmon fillets for Ј2.29 for 2 fillets as a deal in their window. I am interested to see what that works out per Kg as I am sure that Sid in the fish stall at the open market does salmon for Ј8.50 per kg, so who is cheaper? Either way I would buy a few fillets then freeze the salmon to use another time.
Yesterday got tomatoes from veggie man on Portland (we'll have to come up with a name for him!) - big box full for Ј1. I am not sure about freezing aubergines - maybe if you griddled them a little first? They also have garlic x 4 for Ј1 and lots and lots of ginger for Ј1. I wonder if ginger can be frozen? Around 15 big green and red chillies for Ј1 too.
I have no car so ADSA trips are def on the bus I don't mind going out there as I have a yearly bus pass, it just takes more time than I would like...
I want the ALDI to open up on London road - anyone have any news when that might be? And any news on when they are re-doing the open market? I heard it would all be moved to the old Co-Op store which is empty right now. Then when the open market is refurbished (and would be under cover sheltered from rain), they would move all the stores back there?
  • no specifics, just a hi to all the brihtoners!
