A question about : Bridesmaid dresses

Can anyone recommend somewhere to buy bridesmaid dresses. I don't want to spend a fortune, ideally I would like to spend about Ј100 per bridesmaid for dress and shoes, but can go a bit higher if needs be. I'm only having 2 bridesmaids so if it is a little more then not a huge problem (but less would be even better!!).

One bridesmaid is a size 20 so some shops aren't catering for the bigger sizes, especially discount stores. I would ideally like both bridesmaids to where the same dresses (they like the same style so that would work well anyway) but failing that both wearing the same colour and material would be fine.

I'm ideally looking for something fairly traditional full length, in an empire cut, satin or chiffon but very flexible, really depends on what we can find and what looks good on them. Also quite flexible on colour.

We are based in the midlands and happy to go and travel to a shop or order online.

I'm a bit wary of having something made in China as I've heard a few horror stories, but it's not completely out of the question.

I've heard a few good things about Lightinthebox so that is also a possibility.

Any hints, tips or ideas much appreciated!!

  • I am not sure if you have thought of this... When I got married, and was browsing for a wedding dress, the in-store dressmaker also worked independently designing clothes for those who couldn't find clothes to fit them on the high street. She asked me what I wanted for my bridesmaid dresses, and I showed her a picture of a dress I found online and she agreed to make them for me. I think, if my memory serves me right, it cost Ј110 for each dress (I had two bridesmaids too) and that included, 3 fittings (after initial measuring), cost of material and making the actual dresses. She also did the cravats, pocket handkerchiefs, gave my florist material for tying the 3 bouquets together as well as other flowers in the venue, gave my Nan some for the cake design and made small belts for the flower girls. All for Ј220. It may be worth looking more locally, as I'm sure they will appreciate the custom AND you will get exactly what you want.
Just to mention, my dressmaker managed to do all that in 4 months
  • What about ordering from www.sexyher.co.uk? They're based in Croydon, have plenty of choice and get great reviews.
I see you've mentioned Light in the Box but this is also a Chinese retailer so best avoided if you're wary of ordering from China.
Is it worth going to a bridal store, trying some dresses on so you can find what styles work, especially for your larger bridesmaid, and then seeing what you can find online/on the high street? The bridal store don't need to know that you aren't going to buy from them, and designers like Dessy have soooo many styles you're bound to find something.
