A question about : Bored of the rings

I was given a palladium ring as a present. Bought from a well known high street jewelrer. It had a band of brushed matte finish round most of the surface in the middle.

Boxed for several months, I actually just wore it for about a week.

After this we noticed the matte finish on the bottom of the ring had worn off and showing plain shiny metal in a small patch. There is no dent or anything.

Can this really be explained by waer and tear, we hear differing views but most people and other jewelrers have said that the matte finish should be lost lasting to permanent. it should wear off that quick.

Anyone else found this?

  • Had the experience of a white gold ring wearing through to show the yellow gold underneath - but they can be re-plated. No experience of Palladium. But wearing after a week seems a very short time unless it was rubbing against something that can wear away plating quickly - do you have a manual job? Doing a lot of DIY?
  • The title is a bit misleading, anyone would interpret that as looking for an excuse to return the ring.
  • I like the title. Just saying. Nothing else to add.
  • Surely a better title would have been "Book 3: The Return of the Ring"?
    Sorry.
    ZG.
  • My wedding ring is palladium.
It has visible marks of use (fair wear and tear) but no scratches, dings or chips and still shiny without polishing once...and I've hardly taken it off in nearly 7 years.
It sounds like a badly made ring.
  • Stuck this on another thread in this forum today (two ring threads in one day...cor) -

  • What is the matt finish? Is it a plating or something else? The Mrs has some items with a semi-matt finish and its done by etching of the surface and so in those cases it'd be very hard for it to be rubbed off and leave a flat/ smooth and thus shiny underlayer
  • Apparently the matte finish is like a thin coating of finish applied on the surface and even the slightest of edge rubbed against it leaves a minro scratch, daily rubbing against remotes, keys etc.. will easily leave scuff marks.
Not exactly something you would want to fork out for then.
Apparently even the ring display units cause damage to the finish so they have to be really carefull.
We opted to exchange the ring. We were then told they were going to make a loss on this as they would have to throw away the old ring. Also the previous exhanged one would be thrown away!?. But that one wasnt even taken out the shop when we noticed the surface was damaged and they agreed and said come back again tommorow.
We still dont get why if this normal and acceptable why they did not just tell us tht the first time we took the damaged ring back, and tell us to choose a different one.
So we chose another ring that cost about Ј200 less. We were told that as they would be making a loss they will not refund back the difference. To be fair the actual RRP (their RRP) is the same price as the old ring, but it is and has been on a sale price for last 6 months for Ј200 less.
Feel a bit unsure but might just leave it at this if the new ring is good.
  • What their commercial agreements with their suppliers about returning faulty product etc is irrelevant to you. If they've supplied you with defective goods that are not fit for purpose they have to repair, replace or refund. If you only had it a week then you may even be able to reject it and thus get full refund and then be free to buy the other ring and keep the Ј200 yourself.
  • I was rather hoping this thread was about the classic Spectrum text-based adventure game and was going to suggest the OP tried the prequel "The Boggit".
    Alas not.
