A question about : Bookcase storage ideas needed for craft lover

Hi,
My daughter for xmas would like a 'bookcase' sort of thing with a wide shelf in the middle to work at. The bookcase shelves would store all of her paints, resin, moulding material, art pens etc without having to keep opening doors to get her materials out and wide shelf she would work at. Ikea have one but is never ever in stock. I have been looking but nothing. What do all you craft lovers use to store all of your materials in. At the moment all of her materials are scattered all around her bedroom in different draw units which are unsuitable. Can anyone suggest any good sites, good products, etc?

Many thanks.

  • Just a thought but have you looked on fleabay for the 1kea unit you want?
  • What about adapting a second hand display cabinet. The sort you put china or glass on the top shelves, and crockery in the cupboard below. If it had doors you could take them off. Find one where the bottom is a lot wider than the top so you can push an office chair up to it and use it as a desk. Something like a kitchen dresser.

  • Would the Kallax range from Ikea be any good? It's just the usual basic shelves with a clamp to fix any of their non-glass table tops on, plus two legs, so you could go for wider shelves but still a single table top if more storage is needed or you could stack (and fix to the wall) the smaller shelving unit on top.

  • [QUOTE=The Cre8tor;67090359]Not sure about how much you wish to pay for a 'craft storage' type of thing, nor how much stuff she has - but it sounds like quite a bit since she has materials all around her bedroom in different drawer units etc. But, one storage unit did spring to mind... it's something I would LOVE - but sadly, Father Christmas seems to think I belong on the naughty list so I've never had it:
Closed it looks like a tubby wardrobe:
As you might have guessed, it's called the Foldaway Deluxe. And it comes with all the storage boxes that you can see in the first photo. However ... the price might be the stinger, because it costs Ј1395.00 (Ђ 1674.00) incl. VAT.
They do other units - some with two desks, some with no desks at all. They also do lots of other storage ideas.
The website link (below) I've picked up, takes you to the page which shows the desk above (and some others in that range - simply click on the item you want to read more about). But down the left hand side of the page, is a looong list of their different categories - so that you can take a tour of their site.

I did see this but a bit out of my price range. Thanks anyway tho
  • The company that makes the fold away storage unit above also does other versions..... I would look on the Really Useful Boxes website for decent storage...
  • The Ikea Billy bookcases are good. Unless they've changed the design, there is only 1 fixed shelf, all the other shelves just rest on metal pegs and can lift straight off.
You could get someone to cut you a deeper piece of wood to replace one of the shelves and put 2 legs on the front of it. (The underside of the new wood would have to have little grooves cut out to sit on the metal pegs.)
Ikea sell table legs, or you could prob. buy them in a diy store.
