A question about : Big sack of potatoes

Hi all,

After abit of advice. DH bought a massive sack of potatoes that were on offer yesterday for Ј2 {in M0rris0ns}. Normally our limit is mash, and that is something we don't eat very often.

Do you have any ideas what I could use them for? I have already thought of some for soup, some for mash for tops of pies like shepherds pie etc. But then I'm stumped. I know I could make a batch of wedges/roasties and freeze but I'm terrible at making these and then not using them and throwing them out.

I am writing my meal plan today ready to do our shop online tonight and would like to include these for every single meal this week. Inspiration please?

Thanks title=Smile

Best answers:

  • Jacket Potatoes? Loads of toppings you could put on them!
  • Boil some potatoes, until nearly cooked then put into an ovenproof dish and sprinkle with grated cheese. Oven bake until the cheese is melted or crispy, according to your preference.
Oven baked slices of potato, in cheese sauce which you can buy as a powder or ready to pour.

rather than mash make a hotpot with sliced tats on top?

    Tortilla
I make a basic bake; chicken thighs, onion in quarters, potatoes, any other veggies I have to roast (pre-cook parsnips) but that might include peppers, beetroot etc. Toss them all in a little oil, pour into a baking tray, add some garlic if you like it, herbs (bay and oregano are nice but mixed is fine) and bake for half an hour. Check everything is done and eat if so.
Nothing wrong with egg and chips either.
  • Empty the whole sack of spuds into a laundry basket and check them over.
one rotton spud in the bottom of the sack is ;0(
Place the spuds to store in a cool, dark place for longer life.
dinners - boil some potatoes and then slice and fry with onions.
    make mash
slow cooker - make an all in one meal. diced root veg and potatoes in a tomato base sauce. Add dumplins.
  • i have one of these sacks of potatoes and i stand it in my cold greenhouse and they keep for weeks

  • Homemade hash browns
  • Potato bake. Take 3 or 4 medium spuds, peel and slice really thinly. Slice an onion thinly and chop up 3 or 4 rashers of bacon.
Make a pint of white sauce. Put 2 oz margarine, 2 oz plain flour and a pint of milk in a pan, heat and whisk until thick. Add some grated cheese to the sauce if you like at this point.
Grease an oven proof dish then layer up the potatoes, onions and bacon. When you have used half of the ingredients add half of the white sauce. Then keep layering until you have used everything up and pour over the remaining sauce. Season with a bit of black pepper.
Cover and bake in the oven at 180 degrees for 2 hours. Absolutely delicious, my kids love this with sausages but I would happily eat it on its own!
  • Rosti cooked in butter.
  • Baked potato & egg. Baked potato & kidney. Bombay potato. Boulangere potatoes. Dauphinoise potatoes. Leek & potato soup. Potato & cauliflower curry. Potato & pea curry. Potato pie.

  • If stored right they will last for week but you could do loads of things to part prep meals . mash does freeze as do duchesse potatoes or potato nests https://www.lovepotatoes.co.uk/ might have some ideas not really had a peruse myself but came across it a while back when seraching for something
  • If stored right they will last several months; although I would recommend checking over for sprouts after a month.
A lot depends on the variety and how cool you can keep them. Also the basic of keeping them out of the light.
  • Steam them, then mash or slice or chip for the freezer.
Otherwise they will keep for months but as RAS post, watch out for sprouting at this time of year.
Bargain at Ј2 per 12.5kg., cheaper than growing them.
  • If you're planning on freezing mash (an excellent idea), stir through some powdered milk, a tablespoon or more for a serving for two, before you freeze it. If you skip that step when you defrost the mash it can sometimes be a bit watery.
  • Like the O.P I too bought a bag of these spuds, Ј2 wow. So for tonight we're having Rosti done in the waffle maker and I'll look at the other ideas suggested here, thank you.
  • I buy a sack from Morrisons every two weeks and they keep really well, but we are a household of five adults.
    We have them:
    Roasted
Potato scones......these freeze well and are lovely with a drippy egg, bacon and beans, or with jam
    Baked in their jackets
    As gnocchi
    Rosti ....they freeze well
On top of cottage pie.....make and freeze
    Wedges or chips
Sliced and layered in a dish with bacon, mushrooms and cheese sauce.
Sausage and mash always goes down well
Bean and sausage bake put cooked sliced sausages in a dish with a tin of baked beans and a tin of tomatoes top with mash and sprinkle with some grated cheese and sliced onion put in the oven 180c until golden
  • if you struggle with wedges or big chips, cut into 1cm cubes. coat in a little oil, and whack in the oven for 10-15 mins til golden. perfect, quick and so easy!
  • I found this recipe when looking on the Love Potatoes website.
