A question about : Best/cheapest online supermarket delivery question

Hello! Usual caveat - I searched, I looked in sticky threads, I did not find. I've probably missed something. I'm sorry!

THE PREAMBLE

I want to do some online grocery shopping. I've been using Asda. In my opinion, they're not very good, but I have nothing to compare them to. I was hoping you could help.

THE QUESTION - PART ONE

Which supermarket has the best online delivery service? I live on my own, so *my* main criteria is the one with the lowest minimum spend requirement, but I'm interested in hearing about all the pros/cons.

THE QUESTION - PART TWO

Is there a comparison page/tool/whatever that shows all the competing services, along with minimum spend, delivery charges, etc?

Thanks in advance!

  • In terms of my own personal experience my favourite online shopping supermarket is Morrisons. I've used Asda and Tesco in the past and whilst both are still good I feel Morrisons just edges them over, I've had now about 6 or 7 orders, not a great deal but allow me to explain -
1, apart from one special offer item I've never had any substitutes, the item that was substituted was on the buy one get two free offer but was replaced with a much higher value item.
2, you can "lock in" items at a lower price before they are delivered. I've noticed that items on special offer get charged at the lower price PROVIDING they are ordered and checked out within the offer date range. So for example a bottle of wine is at half price till Friday 2nd January, I check out my order on Friday at the lower price and it gets delivered today at said lower price. If I had gone into the store today I'd have paid full price for this item.
3, you can change, cancel, amend your order. If you realise you need to change time/date or even cancel the order you are allowed to, providing it's not gone past the time when you can't which us usually around 24 hours before.
4, they allow you to "fresh check" fruit, veg etc which I've never been offered by Tesco or Asda although I've been told they do allow it.
5, colour coded bags, a small thing but I think it's good that all fridge items have a colour coded handle and frozen has another. Easier for putting stuff away.
6, when you get your delivery they arrive at your door with it all there. I've found with Asda they knock to see if you are in then spend 10-15 minutes in the truck getting everything out. Morrisons has everything there in the tarts ready to hand over, takes half the time of Tesco and Asda.
7, on your first order you get a welcome ginger bread man and on my Xmas delivery I got a special Xmas one too. Small thing again but a nice touch no doubt.
8, special offers online only. When I go to check out sometimes a special "flash sale" page appeared with items on offer not available to others. Now this hasn't always appeared and can be hit n miss but it's a good thing to have and I have got items for 40% cheaper (depending on offer)
Now there are draw backs to them -
1, they are still, so I believe on available in certain areas of the country. I live in Warwickshire and I'm told we are one of the pilot runs, delivery began round here less than a year ago but it will be rolled out across the country.
2, stock range is smaller than other supermarkets and even to what's available within Morrisons itself. This can be frustrating for some, me personally I'm not so bothered, I've never had an issue buying the items I need but it could be a problem for some. I do believe that due to the lesser range available it is making the substitutes less common, as it has happened for me I've only been substituted once.
In terms of pricing yes is isn't the cheapest but I do believe it is very similar pricing to Sainsburys and Tesco, Asda is definitely cheapest online but that doesn't mean Morrisons couldn't be made cheaper with offers. I also have a match and more card which I'm accumulating points on, so far I have over Ј20 and I've only had it about 2 months.
    I hope thus helps OP
  • That's hugely helpful, thank you!
  • Don't rule out Ocado. I'm about to post a code for 25% off first order (min spend Ј40, max discount Ј20) plus free mid-week deliveries for a year.
I have just placed an order for my daughter. It cost Ј68, with savings of Ј67. No voucher, just buying all the half price offers.
Their service is brilliant, with no missing items or silly substitutions, and they guarantee they will be cheaper than Tesco.
  • I started ordering with Iceland in November and I really like them. Ј35 minimum spend and free delivery on your order.
