A question about : Best cheap cat litter?

Hi folks, I don't normally post over here but as it's a cat thing I thought you might be able to help!

I have recently moved house and no longer have a cat flap (it's rented so I can't put one in). My 4.5 year old boy likes being indoors and won't go outside for more than about 5 minutes - he's a timid lad. So, obviously, he is now doing his thing inside and it's costing me a fortune in cat litter.

He's been really, really good at using the tray and so I am trying to make sure I am equally good at keeping it clean for him. But I am getting through so much litter...what are the best cheap ones you have found?

Morrisons is my nearest supermarket and their cheapest value stuff isn't very good (I use lots of it). Their next one up is ok-ish, but I am wondering if there are any other options?

Thanks!
Kate x

  • I use Catsan - it's definitely not the cheapest but a Ј5 bag lasts me over a week for two completely indoor cats (3 trays). I scoop it out regularly and change completely about every 3 days. I used to buy the smartprice one but found it actually ended up costing me more!
  • Yes I am using more of the cheap one so I don't think it's cost-effective. Also, it's heavy.
How much litter do you put in the trays? Maybe I'm putting too much in....I do fill it quite deep because he always seems to dig so much to cover it, IYKWIM?
  • Tesco Value is very good imo
  • I agree with joeblack - when I had my cat I used to but a large bag for around Ј1.50 and it lasted me a fair while - and didn't smell. I used to get Asda's own but I found this smelt really bad when my cat had been to the toilet!!
  • I found the Sainsburys clumping litter to be very good. Good price and clumps really well - annoying though as I shop at Tesco usually!
  • I am a very recent clumping litter convert - with 4 cats that are indoor only (they get out with me into communal garden for an hour or so a day but that is all), I was going through masses of cat litter, coming up to like Ј40-Ј50 per month.
Having tested various litters (had a long thread on here) I now stick to MulticatLitter which is around Ј5.50 per 7kg bag and that bag, with my 4 cats lasts me a whole week. I have an extra large extra deep cat litter box that I empty the whole 7kg bag into and only ick the clumps - believe me with 4 cats I am forever picking those LOL
I guess for one cat that bag would last you well over a month - for Ј5.50 it would not be so bad I guess?
They sell them at Pets at Home, this is the one that I personally buy and swear by now:
They also do normal (not multi cat) version for the same price:
    The link to the product:
    https://www.petsathome.com/shop/clump...n-n-tidy-15271
I too tried Catsan but it was no way as efficient as this one....
    Also tried PAT own brand:
But that one was only 2 litres (and only a Ј1 cheaper) so the Clean and Tidy is much more better - more of it, lasts longer.
    All the best
  • Aldi clumping cat litter! Ј1.79 for 10L. Buy a few bags together if there's not one within regular shopping distance to you. One bag lasts me just under 2 weeks for 2 cats, it's better than any others we've tried (mainly Tesco).
  • Sadly I am without cat at the moment as you will see from my signature, but like dandm1, used to use Sainsbury's clumping cat litter.
Costs less than Ј2 for an 8 litre bag from what I remember.
I still have some left, so perhaps in time I will have to rescue another purrbaby.......
  • Either the Sainsburys or Pets at Home ultra clumping litters are the best by far, I use hardly any with an indoor cat.
  • I too use sainsbury clumping . It's the best one I've found at the price.
  • Tesco Value and Sainsburys Basic appear to be the same product, they are around Ј1.40 for a 10L bag, and I've been using either of them since we got Sammy last May. Neither smell, they work well, and boy did I notice how good they were compared to Co-op brand one, which I bought in an emergency !!
  • Just want to add this, my experiences with cat litter .
I recently bought Sainsbury's ultra clumping cat litter at Ј4.06 for a 5L bag (81p/L). I hated it with a passion, and it lasted 5 days before I threw it out. It had started smelling badly despite de-clumping twice a day, and the clumps stuck like concrete to the plastic even though I filled the tray to several inches.
Changed a few days ago to clumping Oko plus cat litter from Pets at Home, and couldn't be happier - what a difference! It really does clump! So easy to clean, and the clumps don't stick to the plastic. No smell either. It's a revelation. It looks dearer at Ј8.29 for a 10L bag, but this works out at 83p/L and I'm sure it's going to last much, much longer
Edited to add: I've just read the thread again and obviously these litters are more expensive than the value/basic ranges, but might be worth considering at some point? I'll let you know how long my latest purchase lasts!
  • Calculating price per litter is only sometimes a good guide but if one litre of cat litter lasts much longer than 1 litre of another...
Personally I found tesco's own clumping was way too coearse and did not clump as such, it was just sticking like concrete to the sides/bottom of the tray.
The 3 litters I mention (with photos) in my post above are very fine, like sand, clump very well and there is no waste whatever so they last much longer.
At Ј5.50 per 7 litre bag they work out at Ј0.76 per litre so actaually sometimes even cheaper then "economy" brands and considering they last much longer - they are definitely cheaper...
  • I use the worlds best cat litter. It's not the cheapest but it is brilliant. It is easy to clean up and a small 3kg (i think bag) easily lasts a month with one cat.
  • I always buy catsan.
I have tried loads of others but nothing matches it!
  • Pets at Home clumping is good
    Oko cats best also
I do mix with Aldi or Liddles to stretch it however best bet is to order a large amount online (to save money), I get both food (Burns dried & Aniconda Carny, tinned) and litter mostly from Zooplus.
  • Gosh, thank you all so much for your posts - really really useful.
I am trying the Sainsburys clumping stuff at the moment, and I will try the other suggestions as well - will make a trip to Pets at Home at some point soon.
Neffy, I am sorry about Marmaduke, I'm sure you must miss him.
