Our Building and contents insurance is up for renewel so was going to look at others and compare prices

Best answers:

  Chubb Masterpiece and Hiscox 606 but you are unlikely to get any change from Ј1,000 and potentially it'll be much more.
  Why do you need the best? Most people have no need for the levels of cover provided by these policies and so a lower cheaper policy better suits their needs

• The best is to put your details into Confused.com or CompareTheMarket etc and see what they come back with and then go to Direct Line & Aviva as the two big direct insurers that dont quote on the aggregators.
  Defaqto or Which? will tell you who give the better quality product but even then there is a big variance between the policies. For example M&S and Aviva are both 5* products but Aviva give Ј2,500 of contents cover for outbuildings where as M&S is unlimited. How much cover do you need for items in your shed? Repeat all these questions for the different coverages and inner limits.
  Price will come down to a combination of the product quality, their current strategy and how well you fit their target market. One insurer can love an area so price it low, another may have had their fingers burnt in that area so price it high. The aggregators will get actual prices for you and so you can see for yourself
