A question about : bereavement allowance

Hi
can anyone help me? My husband is terminally ill and I have been told that when the inevitable happens I will be entitled to claim bereavement allowance/payment. As with all other benefits there always seems to be a catch to anything that you are supposedly entitled to and I wondered if anyone out there could tell me the rules for this benefit. My husband is 61 I am 49, I work full time, he was medically dismissed but has worked for all his life. Is this benefit means tested therefore disqualifying me for actually working for a living or is it something that they do actually give to you for your grief? Someone please tell me as like with all gov.org sites they just send you round in circles.
thanks

Have you tried the benefits calculator?
  • Bereavement allowance isn't means tested. Anounts would be based on your husbands NI contributions but the maximum amounts would be based on your age at the time:
    The weekly rates are:
    45 years old - Ј33.36
    46 years old - Ј41.14
    47 years old - Ј48.93
    48 years old - Ј56.71
    49 years old - Ј64.50
    50 years old - Ј72.28
    51 years old - Ј80.06
    52 years old - Ј87.85
    53 years old - Ј95.63
    54 years old - Ј103.42
55 years old to State Pension age - Ј111.20
Did you have any dependant children? If so you would claim widows parent allowance instead.
  • Bereavement Allowance is only paid for up to 52 weeks
You might be able to claim Bereavement Allowance (previously known as Widow's Pension) if you're a widow, widower or surviving civil partner aged between 45 and State Pension age.
You can get it for up to 52 weeks from the date your husband, wife or civil partner died.
Bereavement Payment is a one of payment
