A question about : Barclays Contactless not Debiting rightaway ?

Hi All,
I notice when I pay for things using my Barclays Debit card using Chip and PIN if I check online banking my balance is reduced immediately, in fact I notice that the transactions even seem to appear on the statement the very next day now !.

Yet today I notice Morrisons has started accepting Contactless, so it was for Ј9 and I paid with contactless, it came up approved instantly but has not reduced my available balance in Online Banking like a chip and PIN transaction would, I keep a record of all my transactions using Quicken (Old but does the Job) so I always know where I am, but the receipt even showed an Authorisation number, but if it was indeed authorised it was very quick !.

Best answers:

  • The banks I bank with don't debit contactless straight away, only when the shop submits does the bank know a debit has been made.
It is also the same when you only spend a few pound in a supermarket. Most shops have floor limits where anything under certain amount will get authorised without the shop contacting the bank. Go to Tesco's and spend a fiver using chip and pin and the chances are it won't show as unavailable balance until they take the money from you.
You just have to remember small transactions for three or four days or keep a buffer for when they take the money so you don't go into the red.
