  • Martin,
Do you know if the Barclaycard 0% new customer offer applies when you add an 'additional cardmember' (e.g. my partner) to your existing Barclaycard as a 'new customer' hence benefitting from the 13 month 0% APR offer? Is this a loophole for existing customers?!
It's just so much better than the existing customer offer!
    Cheers
    Steve
  • Additional cardholders are just that I'm afraid - additional cardhodlers. In effect it is just letting someone spend on your account - not starting a new account in any way - so it doesn't apply. Sorry
  • I am someone who never has had debt for any period of time on a credit card, but would like to pay for a holiday by using Barclaycards offer, the holiday is 800 in total so how much would be the first minimum payment on the card?
  • You'll be wanting the new customer offer then? 0% on balance transfers (BT) AND purchases for 12-13 months. On Ј800 the min payment should be 2% of the reducing balance (Ј16 initially) and Barclaycard round down the payment to the next whole Ј (so Ј16, Ј15, Ј14 etc)
But remember that you also have a limited period of 60 days in which to do any 0% transfers. Suppose they give you a limit of Ј2600? you can in theory use the whole credit limit by
    1) First BT'ing Ј1,800 (i.e. well under the 90%)
    2) Spending exactly Ј800 on a large purchase
    3) Put the card away and DON'T use it
    4) Most importantly set up an immediate direct debit AND pay 2% of the first statment balance !as soon as you get it just in case the DD doesn't take collect.
Result: you have taken up the full credit limit
However you have to transfer your balance(s) to other cards - so if you wanted this as cash you have to find a 'super balance transfer' card (MBNA,Egg) and others offering balance transfers by cheque (Mint, Goldfish)
Martin, I assume BTs for new card customers aren't subject to the 2% fee you mentioned in connection with the 'life of balance' (LOB) offer for existing customers?
EDIT Have called Barclaycard this afternoon (Fri). They confirm* the following:
Existing cardholders can apply an new 'alternate' card (e.g. Visa for Mastercard) and it will qualify as part of the 'new customer' offer.
On notifying exisiting customers of this deal (2.9% offer): This will be posted to us in our June 2004 statements
*will have to verified, no doubt
  • There's also an interesting article about this offer on the Motleys Fool website.
    It can be found at

  • I don't see this offer on their website, is it not available yet?
  • june 16th i think?
  • In my haste to take advantage of this deal, I made the mistake of submitting an online application for a Barclay card yesterday. It was only after I was reviewing the site that I noticed that the offer does not start till June. I do not know the outcome of my application as they indicated that it will take 7 days to process. Is it possible to cancell this application and re apply, or can I just hold of signing on the dotted line till I have managed to negotiate myself into the new deal. Or perhaps I should not be too greedy and just take their cash up to February free assuming that my application is successful? If there are other alternative then I would be quite happy to consider.
    Cheers
  • take the cash.
learn from your mistake (more important than money!!)
now, let's get back on topic.
  • I have both the BarclayCard Platinum MasterCard 4k & Visa Card 9k.
I've been a customer for over 10 years and feel it’s a great shame that they are not offering this to there loyal customers (I guess there’s no such thing these days). Instead they send those crappy loyal buy DVDs at X price inserts!
So what’s stopping me from cancelling one of the cards maybe the 9k card or both and reapplying?
Surley I'd get the same credit limit or if not more?...

  • Martin
Just received my new barclaycard today it is offering me 0% for 6mths havent activated it yet as i came across your notice of 13mths int free This would suit me better as im transferring a balance from another card what can I do ? ???
  • You can cancel an agreement, usually. The best thing is to be straight up with Barclaycard and say you are aware of the improved card, and would like to apply for that one instead. See what they say, and let us know how you get one (0800 9177 277)
  • Dear Martin,
I have been refused 0% balance transfers by Halifax and capital one with in the last 6 months, there is nothing adverse on my credit history and I know my score is pretty high, I have however just returned to work after 6 months on maternity leave and wonder if this could be the reason why I have been turnned down? I currently have a staff rate with Abbey of 9.9 and they have just released and new staff flat rate of 7.9. Am I better to apply for the new staff rate and transer the money to my bank account then pay off the existing credit card or would you advise I hold on for the Barclaycard 0%for 13 mths. I am just worried that if I have been refused 2 recently I will be refued this one also.
I apreciate your hard work and determination to make the world a more cost effective place!!!
    Thankyou Deirdre ??? :-[
  • Helloo
If I apply for this, will i
    1) be able to use it for a Ј2500 loan to current account
    2) be able to pay the card off within 13months at 0%?
    My head hurts from thinking!!
What was the date for submitting applications please?
    Thanks!!!!
    sarahmoo xx
  • From what Martin was saying in the introductory article, you can't balance transfer on a new Barclaycard to your bank account - only another card. However if you ask them (since they are pefectly able to do this) they may oblige.
    [Did I get that right?]
  • Hi Martin,
Maybe a silly question, but does the balance transfer include those from store cards? I've three I'd like to get rid of!
    Thanks
  • Just got our lass to go into Barclays (Castleford) today to apply for the 0% for 13 months. There were no leaflets / flyers anywhere in the bank so she had to ask, it took the lady another 5 nminutes to find one!!
If at first you don't see then ask!, the offer is there!
  • Hi everyone ( apologies if youve already read this, as I posted it in the wrong place before )
My credit position is very simple, i.e, I don't have any. I have a HSBC Mastercard which has nothing on it, and is only used to pay my internet bill which I pay off every month. That's it. Just a mortgage and a student loan to pay back.
But I need some credit for the next few months due to a lack of cash flow, and I dont intend to put more than Ј600 to Ј700 on the card in full - a decent pay rise in August should mean I then have the money to pay off the card within a number of months, certainly it should be possible in under 12. I'm not the sort of person who is comfortable with debt!
This looks like a good offer to get some short term credit at 0% interest for about a year, but as I say I'm a novice in these matters, though Martin seems to be heavily in favour, so long as you pay the minimum amount without fail.
Can anybody offer me any opinions as to whether they think this might be a good deal for someone in my position? It certainly seems enticing on the surface!!
    Thanks in advance
    Ste
