A question about : Balance Transfer request refused!

I've had a 0% barclaycard for a few months now. Credit Limit Ј4700. However I had Ј1000 of purchases on the card, as well as Ј3500 in balance transfers. Last week talked to customer service rep and asked if I could pay off the card in full and then do another balance transfer at 0% for life. (up to credit limit). No problem he said. We went through each potential gotcha, number of transfers, Ј5000 limit, time period etc, and he admitted that they had had so much grief over them that the reps had been advised to ignore them. Great I thought!
So I paid the card off, signed up to contribute Ј1 per month through paypal on the card and waited until today, when my balance showed as Ј0.

Called up BC and was told that they could not allow me to do a balance transfer as my credit score was too low. However, no problem with putting purchases on the card. I was passed to three people before the final answer was NO BALANCE TRANSFERS

The Credit score stuff was complete tosh. I earn > Ј100,000, and have limits with MBNA of Ј22,500, and Lloyds of Ј13,000.

I offered some choice words pertaining to weedling out of the deal, and cancelled my card on the spot.
What a bunch of sharks!

Be warned

This is my first post so apologies and guidance if posted incorrectly. My husband who has had a barclaycard for years and owes nothing on it, recently received through the post the offer of 2.9 percent interest for the life of new balance transfers.
We decided to take advantage of these offers. However we were told the credit rating was too low. When we pointed out that they had also sent us cheques to use on these transfers we were told they were standard.
How can they get away with sending out cheques, but when you phone state that you can not have the transfer.
How can they get away with this. Suffice to say the card has now been cancelled
  • exactly what happened to me today to my surprise i had a great scheme in mind to talk barclaycard into giving me 0% on transferring my 1400 quid to them from egg card, they agreed then said my credt thing was too low, i asked then if i could have the current llower rate of interest for existing customers who wish to transfer a balance and was refused that too, it seems the offers are only for 'selected' existing customers, so nothing ot do with the fact i have not bought anything on that barclaycard for 2 yrs then??? i paid them off in full after calculating that i paid them a total of 116 quid in min payments last year and 80 quid of that was pure interest. yes they are the sharks of the credit card industry
  • This has just happened to me. I rang up Barclaycard to transfer approx Ј1300 from my Abbey card to be told I was not eligible, the reasons being:
    1. I have not used the card for some time (had zero ballance for a few months).
    and
    2. my credit history is poor (I can't believe this we are just in the process of moving home - have consequently just moved mortgages with no problems, we have no other debts, I missed a credit card payment once (over 2 years ago - surely not the reason)).
I have had a Barclaycard for over 10 years, so I promptly cancelled my (gold???!!?) account.
This is an appalling treatment of existing customers - I shall be doing my bit and telling friends and family of this (many of whom have Barclaycards), if I can get a few of them to cancel their accounts I will feel better.
Thinking about it I did transfer my ballance away from Barclaycard some time ago, at the time I asked Barclaycard if they could offer me a new rate to encourage me to keep my ballance with them - they could not, so I moved the ballance - maybe they are bitter??
    Rant over.
    Martin your thoughts on this?

  • Hi there- for many months barclaycard pleaded with me to take a card. recently i decided to do so. my old card had a credit limit of Ј10,000 . I told barclaycard that i would have a balance transfer of Ј3,000--which was under their Ј5,000 limit. The card arrived with a credit limit of Ј1500. what an utter nonsense--this was of no use to me as the balance transfer alone was twice the credit limit.when i telephoned to complain the guy said the position would be reviewed in 3 months. barclaycard-get stuffed for wasting my time. • How annoying m8. THey mave have done a credit search on you and see u as a risk. I know this sounds odd, but if u have that amount of credit with other cards, they will see Red even though you earn what you stated.
    Give them the brush!!
  • Does anyone know if Virgin Card holders are charged to transfer balances - looked at statement and it suggests that I have been charge nearly #80 for 2 balance transfers?! Yet to call them yet. :-/
  • Oh my God
How frustrating is this credit card stuff?
You have a job with decent pay, pay all yourbills on time, generally keep your nose clean...
You are ASKED if you want a credit card and then when you apply you are turned down.
What I want to know is, is it worth it to apply to Equifax
pay the fee and find out why you were turned down?
Even if you knew what it was - would you be able to rectify it?
    Please someone HELP
    Eileen
  • Eileen,
You can be turned down for all sorts of reasons, but it is worth finding out if your credit record is right for a number of reasons. Credit references are used by utility companies, phone companies, banks, mortgage companies, stores, catalogues etc etc etc.
Here is a checklist of possible reasons why you were turned down?
You have recently moved and don't have much of a credit record at your new address yet?
You aren't on the electoral roll?
You bank with HSBC/ First direct who don't share account information with the credit agencies and you are therefore 'invisible' to whoever you applied to?
Best thing is to apply to whoever you have a current account with first, wait six months and then apply for a different card if you don't want to stay with your current bank.
Worth trying a second lender too, some use different credit agencies and rules so you might not be turned down next time.
    Good luck.
    R.
