A question about : Bag 2 for 1 at Odeon on Wednesday's without an Orange phone

What's it about?

If you haven't heard of Orange Wednesdays, where've you been? Every Wednesday any Orange customer can go to almost any cinema and get a 2 for 1 on the cinema ticket entry.

Yet this loophole is anyone, not just Orange customers can get access to the deal, for a one-off expenditure of just £1 therefore saving you (and a friend) the cost of a cinema ticket each time.

How the loophole works

It's quite simple really, you just buy a £1 pay-as-you-go Sim from Orange for a £1 and then you can use this to grab the tickets.

A Sim is the small (roughly 2cm by 1cm) microchip card that you insert into a phone when it's first set up. It provides the identity of a phone for the mobile network, so it can recognise, bill and send calls to individual customers. The Sim card is usually located behind the battery on the back of the phone. Therefore when you temporarily change the Sim card in your phone, you've technically got an Orange phone.

How to get the 2for1 deal

The process of getting the 2for1 is quite simple. Once you get the Orange sim, pop it in your phone instead of your normal Sim, then text Film to 241 or call 241, it'll then send you a message which you show to the cinema ticket desk to get the deal.

You may need to unlock your handset

One tiny fly in the ointment is that when you put the Sim card in your phone it many not work. That's because some mobile networks lock handsets so only its sim cards can be used in the phone. If your Sim card doesn't work, there's an easy, free and legal way to unlock it. For details read the Unlock your mobile article.

How long will the Sim last?

To keep the Sim activate you need make a call at least once every 6 months. Yet this includes free calls to check your balance, just dial 453 from your phone and this will count as a call.

However do remember you have to pay to receive the 2fo1 text from Orange (it's 35p), the PAYG initially has £1 credit on it and once it runs out you will need to top it up (which is a minimum of £5)

When the credit does run out the minimum top up amount is £5. If you know you're going to use that amount of credit for cheap cinema tickets fine, if not just buy a new sim card as and when you need it.

Any possible problems?

Within Orange's terms and conditions it does state 'Text tickets are issued on a priority basis to active customers who spend over £5 per month with Orange. Orange may revise the terms of this promotion from time to time.'

This means it does have a get our clause and while I've not yet heard of anyone falling foul of this. There's always a chance, then again the outlay is only £1.

  • Great idea Martin, thanks! I think I'm going to use my old phone for it and make it my 'wednesday phone'!
  • No need for even a Ј1 outlay today if you send for a free Orange sim
    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/...4&postcount=21
  • According to the Orange website, you can apply for a free sim here www.orange.co.uk/itchyfreesim
    until 31 Dec 06.
I filled out the form & it said the sim would be sent within a few days.
  • If I get a free sim surely I'll have to put credit on it in order to text/call to get the 2 for 1 offer?
Is there any way around this?
  • Yeah, the free sims won't work as you have to send a text message each week in order to use the offer. So easiest thing is to just buy a Ј1 sim card.
  • There is another Orange loophole but you need a friend on Orange (sorry I am using mine today) to assist. They send the text in the usual way and then when they receive the offer code by return text they forward it to you to present at the box office. Of course, they cannot be using the same code on the same day as the code can only be used once (at least I expect so , haven't tried to push my luck on this one)
  • where can you top up for just a fiver? Everywhere I go wants a minimum of £10 top up, which i dont really want to do, as all I use it for is the free cinema tickets?
  • Unlock lots of Phones FREE Here: https://www.unlockme.co.uk/unlockme.html
241 is FREE TO CALL! Don't Text - 1 Sim can last you forever
And the Text message does not ALWAYS cost 35p. Often, it is just the 12p Message charge.
  • Also remember that repeatedly extracting, and re-inserting simcards may damage them and the phone.
  • Thanks cheeky.
  • I use an Orange top-up card, which allows a Ј5 top-up. I also use an old mobile phone and keep the Orange sim-card permanently in that for use on Wednesdays.
  • I have an Orange Pay-As-You-Go phone which is only used for emergencies, thus it gets very little spend on it. I looked at the Orange Wednesday's offer and thought I was ineligible because of condition No. 22 in their T&C's.
Here's the quote from the T&C's...
"22. Text tickets are subject to availability. Text tickets are issued on a priority basis to active customers who spend over £5 per month with Orange. Orange may revise the terms of this promotion from time to time."
Have I been missing out on this for years?

  • Subscribe to SeeFilmFirst (www.seefilmfirst.com) and every few weeks (usually on a Monday) you will receive an email for preview screenings of a new film. You are given a code to enter on the website. You can then choose which cinema, dates and times you want. You can get 2 tickets for the film. (You can subscribe using another email address and get another 2 - I have done that and can usually get 4 tickets for the whole family. Haven't tried more than 2 email addresses but I reckon you can get as many as you like.) I have seen the Devil Wears Prada, Children of Men and A Good Year - the new Russell Crowe film.
Fantastic fun for free - check out the alliteration!

I've just subscribed and will wait to see if I get in to any decent films. Have texted Orange for the 2 for 1 without success. I just got a response saying I wasn't eligible presumably as I use the phone rarely and don't top up a minimum of Ј5 monthly! Can't see a way round this
