A question about : Applying for a Credit card with previous debtor

Hi

I'm not sure if anyone can answer this but I thought I would ask anyway and see how far I get with it
I would like to apply for the Barclaycard with 35month 0% but I am a bit worried because I got into some bad debt with them in the past which since been removed off my credit file because its probably close to 9 years.. or possibly even longer since it happened.
I'm not so worried about being declined, (although I have done a soft search using Martin's link and Barclaycard is one of the cards recommended)
What I am worried about is reopening old debt and being asked to pay it now after so long or being approved for it and they give me a credit limit equal to the debt amount and add the debt to the new account, where I would have to pay it.
My credit is improving and should be back on par very soon so don't want anything that may derail it.
Does anyone know if there is some type of statute that prevents things like this being done or is it just better to steer clear of them?

Thanks In advance

Best answers:

  • Why are you so keen to get into debt again?
  • I had the same situation as yourself have had a Barclaycard twice since then and was never asked about old debt.
  • I only became interested in Barclaycard when Martin's soft search on my credit highlighted them as the most likely to give me a new card otherwise I would have left them alone.
    Thanks Nasqueron and Lynz68.
I guess its just a case of deciding whether to submit an application or not.
    Cheers
  • I had a Barclaycard several years ago which due to financial issues I ended up with late payments on. I used it wrongly and hence got into the trap of minimum payments and late payment markers. I did get it paid off.
A couple of years back, I applied for a new Barclaycard Reward card. I had no problems getting the card. I met the requirements (income etc) and passed the credit check. I now make sure I pay off the bill every month so that I take advantage of the benefits at no cost to myself
Companies realise that our circumstances change.
  • OP why not over pay on your current debts?
  • The old debt will NOT come back to bite you.
    The new one might though
