A question about : AOL Broadband offers (merged threads)

Don't know if this is new or I've just missed it, or my maths is rubbish. This seems like a reliable way to get cheap broadband if you haven't jumped in yet, without paying upfront or paying for a modem or connection, free email support, and an 0870 helpline, which although is not as good as freephone, is much better than some premium set ups. Possibly also an option for ex-e7even victims who want a cheap connection from a company that will not go bust.

AOL Silver (1Mbps)
1st Month FREE
Next Six months Ј14.99
Then Ј17.99 per month

Total cost for 13 months = Ј197.88
less Quidco Cashback of Ј45 = Ј152.88 (see www.quidco.com)
= UNDER Ј12 PER MONTH FOR AOL BROADBAND, FREE CONNECTION AND MODEM.

Best answers:

  • Seems quite good , whats AOL like ?
  • Have they dumped their proprietary login-in/browser solution?
Can one now use any browser/program with AOL?
And where did you read about e7-ners? There is no mention of any special package for them on AOL web site
  • That is off course if quidco tracks and pays out, and they don't call them AO-HELL for nothing
  • Not sure if someone has already posted this. But I'm posting it hoping that it will benefit someone.
My AOL silver contract was about to end. As I was paying Ј17.99/month on it I decided to move to TalkTalk and called up AOL to cancel my connection when the contract ends.
When I told the cust service rep the reason for my decision to move away from AOL, she offered to match the TalkTalk Pricing, if I take AOL Talk on my phone line.
My monthly charge has now reduced from Ј17.99 to Ј9.99 for AOL Silver, and I have taken the Pay as you go option on AOL Talk which does not have any monthly charge. I only have to pay for the calls that I make.
Effectively I am paying Ј11 for BT Line rental + Ј9.99 for my AOL Silver which is the same as the talktalk pricing. The drawback is that it does not include the free calls. However a benefit is that you do not have to pay the upfront fees that you need to pay for TalkTalk contract and also there is no 18 months lock in.

  • I'd be wary of signing up to AOL, and I'm with them! (But only till September). Their customer service is awful, I'm sure I posted on here about the bad experience I had a few weeks back, no broadband for 2 weeks and given the run around constantly. Eventually had to get my neighbour (IT technician) to speak to them to try to find out what the problem was, they cut him off 4 times cos they didn't want to speak to someone who knew what they were talking about! Avoid at all costs!
  • i'll post instructions on the techie board so its available for all to see.
  • You can find the instructions regarding AOL in this post HERE by ali137
  • Through my link (above) it says £14.99 per month - doesn't mention anything about the price hike though it wouldn't surprise me if it's hidden away somewhere  Surely total cost incl £45 cashback is £134.88 over the 12 months including the wireless router, which I presume we can keep after ditching AOL after 12 months?
  • I can't believe I'm about to do this but I live in the sticks and the fastest my broadband goes is 512k, am with Zen and currently pay Ј24.99/month for "upto 8meg servce" and it is capped at 20gigs/month download.
Anyway AOL silver is 14.99/month 1meg service and unlimited downloads.
you also get a free wirelessrouter + 1 month free
quido are doing Ј45 cash back
sell the router on ebay for Ј45ish AOL say its worth Ј55
    Ј100 saving, annaul AOL bill = 11 (1 month free) x Ј14.99 = Ј164.89
So thats broadband for a year for Ј65 and true unlimited downloads.
Only draw back for myself is there is no static IP address but there are websites like no-ip.com if you need to host a website.
Can anyone see any draw backs to this offer? Apart from the AOL software which is optional if you've got a ethernet modem.
    -Scott
  • AOL are shocking, customer service is useless.
You can't use your own wireless equipment... no static ip as above.
I was with them 2 months (Free) becuase they messed everything up big time i was lied too about speeds etc so i got my MAC code and left
  • AOL Silver is an 8MB service isn't it??
  • Hi,
I am one of those sad people who is with AOL, but I had noticed that they have cut the price to Ј14,99 and mine was due to increase to Ј17.99 for the final 6 months of the contract.
I have spoken to their online help to be told that this is only for new customers and after pressing cancellation despite the fact I would have to pay them I was told they can only change my plan after 10 months. After pressing the points further, including the knowlege that my friend has just been offered this for Ј9.99 the staff member consulted with a supervisor and my plan is reduced to Ј14.99.
Sop much for new customers only.

  • Don;t suppose AOL is any worse than the others. I discovered a couple of months back that I was still paying Ј17.99 for broadband with Wanadoo that new customers were getting for Ј14.99. The customer service team tried in vain for several minutes to get me onto a another package (i.e. higher priced) before agreeing to lower my monthly charge. They also gave me 1 month free of charge as a good will gesture.
In summary if your in your 12 month contract you don't have too much power. However if outside, then they should be offering you bigger discounts to stay...
  • I have been with AOL on ''silver'' broadband for some time so when I saw an ad on tv for ''wireless broadband for £14.99+free router'', I asked about online from AOL's ''helpline chat''.
They told me I had to pay £58 FOR THE ROUTER and then £17.99 per month,(which is what I am paying at the moment for a ''wired'' connection), as the offer was only for NEW members.
I called AOL on the freephone 0800 2006254 number I found on ''say no to 0870''; said that this seemed unfair to present customers; and was offered 1year at £14.99 and a free router as ''a special offer to loyal members like yourself''.
So I end up with a wireless connection and £36 saving over a year.
I do have to start a new contract for 1 year but I wasn't about to change anyway.
