A question about : Anyone else on TalkTalk having a strange phone problem?

I am having a bit of a nightmare problem, and even the phone engineer is stumped. So I thought I'd just see if anyone else is having the same thing.

If you are, you may not even know it. It's all fine at my end. But when people phone me, a small number of them hear it ring once, and then it goes silent. At least 3 people have told me this, one is local, the other is on the other side of Yorkshire and I think the third one was using a mobile phone.

The trouble is that I can't replicate the problem, because it's fine from our mobiles.

My neighbour got the same problem phoning someone else in a different part of Yorkshire.

So I just wondered if anyone else with TalkTalk is getting the same issue.

Thanks guys

  • Not the same problem as you but the other week I had no internet or dialing tone (my phone has a red light when no dial tone)
However people could phone me and the phone would ring at my end, but when I picked it up the phone was dead - then would ring again when I put the phone back down.
Talktalk first said it was an internal wiring fault - then said there was a fault at their end and an engineer would come out in the next 48 hours.
About 8 hours later the "fault" rectified itself, although Talktalk was sending me text messages saying an engineer would be coming out for the next 2 weeks.
I have recently switched to Talktalk from Virgin as Virgin no longer want non-cable people (I have been with Virgin for 15 years and never had any problems with phone or internet)
  • Interesting, thanks I suspect there is some sort of exchange problem going on. Hope they suss and sort it soon. I was also with Virgin when I was in Sussex. They were fab. But we can't get them here Although there was something on the news about them expanding their area soon, so I'm crossing my fingers.
It's been torture trying to get this resolved. Like you said, they keep texting and phoning with Auto calls. I don't think I will stay with them once our contract is up.
    Thanks for replying

  • I had just this problem and a rather nasty (I actually complained about him and discovered he had a rep for abusive behaviour and was on his way out) engineer came out and 'fixed it' then it went wrong again and a much nicer, older, and more experienced engineer came out and fixed it properly.
He said he couldn't believe what he found when he opened the box on the street, cut wires waving around and no indication of where any of them went, a legacy of umpteen botched 'repairs' so bad he would have to write up a very detailed report about it.
If you have a history of problems with the phone line it might be something similar.
    Good luck.
  • Thanks loads for that. Horrible for you, but nice for me to think it's not just me.
The worst part is that I can't test it. Because from my end it's all working fine. They keep running what seem to be the same tests over and over. Then they text me to ask if it's fixed, and I have to get my neighbour to test it. I don't know what it is, but it's definitely a TalkTalk issue, not me. If it goes on, I'll ask them to let me out of my contract, and I'll move elsewhere.
Sounds very not nice with the first engineer you had. But glad you got it sorted in the end.
    Thanks again

  • Slight possibility that it happens when someone calls and your phone is engaged. You can test this if you've got two mobiles.
  • Thanks One-Eye, but it's more consistent than that. It happens every time from the same phones, and never from the others.
Thanks all for trying to help me suss it. I think I have more chance of someone here finding the solution than of TalkTalk getting there.
