A question about : Any way of finding out who my car finance loan was with?

I bought my very first car in 1995/6 and was very young and naive and now think that it is very likely this may have had PPI attached to it even though I wouldn't have wanted it. The car was a new Citroen bought from a Citroen dealer - they are no longer open though. I contacted Citroen and asked who was the finance company they used back then and was told it was Santander?!?!? Obviously when I contacted them they told me they have only recently took over the car finance for them. So does anybody have any ideas where or how I find out this information? I have asked my local bank if they can look up my old statements to see if I can find it that way but they say they don't have statements going back that far? I also have another PPI question I b need to ask all you experts but don't want to waffle on too much! Hope this is enough info and thank you very much to everyone in advance!

Best answers:

  • 10 years before regulation and no records, wouldn't bother with this one to be honest
  • Thanks for the reply but I'm a bit of a persister!!! If at first you don't succeed....hence asking the question on here to maybe garner some ideas I hadn't thought of so far
  • The reason I am asking for help on here is I had a section 75 claim that I needed help with and received some helpful replies (and also some replies telling me I had no case and to walk away) the upshot was after battling away and not taking no for an answer I received a full refund and compensation from the cc company
  • Car dealers weren't regulated, most credit card companies were.
  • Section 75 is different because it relates to the Consumer Credit Act 1974 (it is section 75 of that Act which provides protection) and FOS has jurisdiction over any disputes over it that arose since 6 April 2007.
However, PPI is governed by the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000. The part which governs it only became law on 15 January 2005.
Whilst banks, building societies and insurance companies volunteered to allow the Financial Ombudsman Service jurisdiction before then, your policy (if it existed) was sold by a car dealership and, by definition, only the person who sold it could have missold it.
So your complaint is against the dealer. If they no longer exist you have nobody to complain to. If they do still exist (and are not simply somebody else with a similar name) then you can complain but they can rely on section 14B of the Limitation Act 1980 to say it is too late.
