A question about : Any advice from last time please?

Hi there, due to fly out on to Barcelona on Thursday.
I'm just wondering if anyone who experienced this last year has any advice for those of us who may face a similar situation this time around.
I've got insurance, and am supposed to be covered for this eventuality.
Anything else I need to know about?
Thanks ! title=Big

  • Hi,
We are off to Benidorm from Edinburgh on Sunday hopefully. Have looked thru my insurance documents and it seems im not covered for the ash cloud, but havng read some more on it it seems alot of insurance companies do not cover this issue.
Booked all the holiday individually, flights - Ryanair, Hotel - Alpharooms, Transfers and parking seperate too.
Flight paid for by credit card and it looks like if its cancelled i can claim it back or re-book for free.
Alpha rooms website says i can amend/cancel if due to the ash cloud if needed and the parking and transfers look to be the only thing i would loss out on.
As we are not going till sunday i am hoping it blows away by then, fingers crossed and good luck to anyone else flying around this time !

  • Main advice, if you happen to get stuck and need to claim, keep receipts for EVERYTHING, even bottles of water and snacks.
Keep expenses to a minimum if you can, as there will often be limits set on payouts for food and accommodation, as well as alternative transport. Airlines and insurers will often refuse to cover alcohol and tips, and airlines will ONLY pay for food/drink/accomodation, not extra clothes, laundry, entertainment, travel around the place etc.
If you need to get info from your airline, internet is best and cheaper than calling. If you must call, DO NOT use your mobile, as you will run up a huge bill which they will NOT pay. They are required to pay for 2 x 10 minute calls per group per trip, thats it.

  • Thanks Kira000 - that's very helpful, especially the note about phone calls.
blueoctober- good luck for Sunday. I think the not knowing is the worst part of all this.
  • I was due to fly out from Prestwick to Dublin this morning, got an email when I got up at 4am to leave to say flight is cancelled. Was only going for 1 night, due to fly back tomorrow at 8pm.
No viable alternative flight, ferry, train etc to make my trip possible, I have tickets for Roger Waters at the O2 Dublin tonight which I now can't use. I can get a refund on the flight from Ryanair, but will be out of pocket for the tickets, hotel and parking.
Am assuming there will be no compensation from anyone that would cover my losses.
  • Thanks Cityboy, that's what I thought. Nope have no insurance for the non-attendance of the concert, looks like a waste of Ј150
  • Try and find out if the airline you are flying with has a "local" number that you can use abroad - i.e. virgin atlantic has a US number that basically routes you back through to the UK call centre. It's another thing that could help save you some money if phonecalls become necessary. I ended up skypeing my parents and asking them to do any ringing around for us - which kept more costs down.
Anyway good luck everyone - we're due to fly on Saturday and I'm sure it will be fine. If flights do get cancelled well you'll get the option of a refund or to be moved onto a flight at a later date. There are some great tips above f you're already out there - the airline will get you back home but it might take a while unfortunately.
  • Thanks you so much ! that's very useful, exceeding all the note on telephone call.
  • The phone call information are very valuable this will help me since I'm having plans.
