A question about : Ancestry.co.uk FREE

I think this was posted last year, but the access numbers are different this time, so I am posting again.

There has been a whole page advert in the Guardian weekend magazine section for the last few weeks for a 30 day free access to Ancestry.co.uk, with a free pdf copy of 'Life in victorian Britain' by Tony Robinson.

Text from the advert:

1. Call 0800 032 4684 (lines open 9am-9.30pm mon to sat and 9am-6pm sunday.
2. Note down your access code and login details
3. Go to ancestry.co.uk and start your journey of discovery

Free trial requires registration with a valid credit card but no money wil be taken during the free trial. To cancel, simply call or email Ancestry.co.uk Otherwise an annual membership of Ј69.95 (!!!!) will be taken automatically after 30 days.

You'll have free addess to:
The largest collection of UK family records on the web
The only site to offer the complete set of UK cesuses from 1841 to 1901
Over 500 million names dating back to the 1500s
I haven't tried it myself, but plan to when I have more free time

I suggest anyone setting it up uses the MSE reminder/tart email service to remind them to cancel as the annual membership is very steep!

This is another site for births, deaths and marriages, completely free:

  • I have noticed that some counties have now put fairly recent births marriages and deaths free indexes online, for instance this is Kent's
    https://extranet3.kent.gov.uk/sp/rois/home.html
If you are looking at pre 1900 births and marriages then you can always try the IGI on www.familysearch.org which is free to look at.

Actually, the IGI covers the period BEFORE the creation of the Registrars Office in mid-1837 (although it does cover some up until the 1860's). It records entries from the parish records for births and marriages back until about 1588.
  • This is a good site, parish records, quite detailed, but far from complete, only certain areas:
