A question about : Am I entitled to Working or Child Tax Credits?

Hi,

I am a bit confused whether it would be worth my time to claim working or child tax credits.

I am married with a 2 year old son. My husband works full time on a salary of around Ј30,000 per year. I work part time on a 10 hour contract, which equates to around Ј3744 per year, plus some overtime. So we have a combined income of around Ј34,000. I currently don't pay tax or national insurance, my husband claims the full Ј243 per month in childcare vouchers.

We also get child benefit of Ј82 per month.

Is our combined income too high for me to claim either child or working tax credits? I seem to remember reading somewhere that there was a cutoff of around Ј26,000 but I'm not sure whether this was combined or not.

Thanks for your help.

Best answers:

  • The cut off is 26,000 if you have 1 child, no disabilities and no qualifying childcare costs. You probably wouldn't qualify for childcare help with tax credits because you work under 16 hours (unless there is a reason, such as a disability or caring responsibilities).
The cut-off varies depending on circumstances.

  • cutoff for working tax credits is around Ј18k for a couple
cutoff for child tax credits for one child is around Ј26k with no childcare costs
this is household income so both yours and your husbands
The cutoff is higher with childcare costs (assuming you did not take the vouchers) but you both need to be working a minimum of 16 hours each
