A question about : Agonising Back & neck spasms

Just don't know what happening to me. About 3 moths ago I stretched for something while kneeling down and had a back seizure.
My lower right back had completely seized and I couldn't move for 3 days. If I tried to move I would get a agonising spasm (cramp style) for minutes.
Eventually I recovered after much co-codemol and Ibroprofen and although tender my back problem hasn't re-occurred.
Never felt pain like it.

However, yesterday I woke up with a stiff neck, which turned into the same spasms gradually worsening throughout the day until I couldn't move my neck without the same agonising pain I had before with my back.
I am currently loaded with co-codemol and ibroprofen again.

Does anyone have any similar experiences I could learn from as I have no idea what is happening.
I am 50+ but generally in good health apart from this problem

Best answers:

  • You need to see a doctor or a chiropractor. This is not the place for medical advice.
  • Sounds like a nerve issue but I am not here to diagnose as I am not medically trained and just have a basic understanding of the way the body works through my own experience. If it is a nerve pain there are things you can do but resting in a good posture with little or no stress or strain on your spine would be the best thing to do until the loud part of the pain dies down and you have got a bit more movement back to do more with to help yourself out. Pain is generally a warning, listen to what it tells you to do if you want to make your life easier!
  • The first 30 years are the worst, after that you get used to it.
  • Get thee to a physio.
  • This can be very debilitating and you should speak to your GP who may be able to prescribe some muscle relaxants for you.
Long-term, if this is a recurring problem, insist on being referred to a physio and/or a pain clinic. You need a proper medical diagnosis so don't waste your money on chiropractors, acupuncturists and so on.
Good luck, I know how horrid this can be!
  • Try your doctors or Physio.
    Can't advise on a forum.
  • We can't give medical advice I'm afraid. Speak to your doctor.

  • Wow that's a bedside manner and a half ! I'd opt for another GP if it's at all possible.
I'm getting older and there are aches and pains and quite a few problems I don't much like but are things I can realistically expect at my age size and circumstance .
But you're your own best judge of when something is outside the general wear/tear & ageing scenario and it's a problem that needs sorting.
Don't embark on expensive private physio/chiro/whatever if you haven't had proper care and consideration of your issues from your GP first. Shame s/he is such an ****.
That said with many joint and back issues GPs are not really able to help much, unless it's pain relief or an op, and physios etc often do.
    Best of luck
  • Different GP. It could just be one of those things, it could be a symptoms of disc problems, it could be a postural thing - we can't diagnose it, you need to see a useful medical professional. He wasn't.
  • I'd recommend an osteopath (from my own experience of a back problem.) My GP is very happy that I fund my own treatment!!!
  • I had agonising back pain last Autumn. I was referred to an NHS physio by my GP. A couple of weeks wait only.
However, if I had wished to see a chiropractor or an osteopath, I could have arranged that myself and paid the fees. There are a couple of such clinics in my small town. They have web sites with information and charges.
