so can you go to prison if you do not pay them?.

  • Yes, you can go to prison for not paying your council tax and, I believe, your TV licence too. If it is a court fine you are struggling to pay then, yes, you can go to prison, it is the ultimate sanction otherwise no one would ever bother paying their fines (some don't and seem to get away with it).
If you are having problems with debt, go to the Citizens Advice Bureau, they will liaise with the council about your council tax and anyone else you owe money to. They might be able to sort out a payment scheme for you, one you can afford. Though the court will have taken into consideration your ability to pay a fine, so don't know how flexible they are. I suppose if you are willing to pay something, they are happy enough.
Most important things to pay are mortgage and council tax. If you really can't afford the TV licence, get rid of your TV! And if you have Sky, bin that definitely!

Yes you can go to prison.
You need to prioritize. From a glance at your posts it seems you have asked benefit and debt related questions on this site in the last couple of weeks you have been registered as a member. You also mention buying a new gas cooker and ask about 3 different holiday locations - UK, Cuba and the Caribbean!!!
You must sort out your affairs before spending on holidays like this!!!! As suggested by nh - visit the CAB and get your affairs under control before they get worse and delay a holiday until you know where you stand financially.
P.S. Your email is visible - to change that and withold it from public view go to profile at the top of the page. (If you want to!)
  • hi fran,
thankyou for repling firstly i do appreciate it, but i have to say i am not totally happy with your post, i have been a member for more than a couple of weeks i have been a member since june last year, and in that time yes i have posted about gas cooker and more recent holidays to cuba, but i have to say i didnt think my posts were to be anaylised before you could post a certain subject.
i am sorry if i do sound peeved but i feel like you have judged me on what you think my circumstances are, how do you know that my previous posts havent been relating to my friends who have not got a pc, or indeed if i myself wanted a holiday to cuba.
im afraid that you sound quite patronising in your post.
i do not wish to affend you or any body else i just disagree with not what you are saying, more how you put it in your words.
let me know if you disagree.

  • It seems legitimate to me when someone says they want to go to Cuba in July (and yes, you said "I want&quot, and then a week later they post about their debts and wondering if they can go to prison, to connect the two.
If someone is in trouble, the best help they can get is from someone who is willing to go to the trouble, as Fran has, to look back through their posts and see if there is anything that sheds more light on the situation.
You said "any advice gratefully received". Her advice is sound, whether she has all the facts or not. You must carefully prioritise your spending. You cannot spend on anything which you can do without until you get out of trouble. Otherwise, your trouble will just get worse.
  • hi, as i said i am gratefull for all the advice i have recieved on here and have heard some great advice from fran herself, it was just a felt like i couldnt ask for advice on a paticular subject without getting my other post looked at and relating to a question i had before.
i could of been going in holiday to cuba, i didnt say i was paying for it, i was just making a point about how the reply was posted, i was not asking for advice on how to control my debt, just asking a question relating to a debt i have at the moment.
i am not trying to say im not gratefull but i have the right to respond to something i disagree with
  • yes i understand its hard to write something but i hope you see my point(dont want to make a mountain here!!).
    thanks anyway.
just to add a quick point at the end here , if you look at my profile you will see im from the north west and the posts you have added are to fly from glasgow, i was enquiring for my sister wholives there and just found it easier to put ''i'' on there

All I was concerned with was whether you might be someone with uncontrollabale debts but on the other hand spending like mad - if that's not you then that's great!! Have a good holiday anyway...
